Sennett official resigns over residency

The Town of Sennett Assessment Review Board chairwoman will resign from her position, according to a letter she sent Wednesday.
Karen Green stated in an e-mail to the town that she has learned she is required to live in Sennett to be on the board. Green is also the human resources director for the city of Auburn, a position which requires her to be an Auburn resident.

“I must resign my seat to the Town of Sennett Board of Assessment Review and will be unable to continue my 26-year tenure as my 2009 residency will be in the city of Auburn,” she stated, “therefore, (I am) unable to meet the residency requirements for the May 2009 Grievance Day.”

Green's residency came into question this week when published reports revealed she has not paid property taxes on her Taylor Road farm for almost 10 years.

Her stated reason for being exempt from the taxes has been the property's one-time status as a toxic site. However, some town officials have suggested she used her status on the board to keep from paying, and representatives from the state Department of Economic Conservation have stated the site has been cleaned of contamination.

Auburn officials have also raised concerns over her residency status, and she is still registered to vote from the Taylor Road address, according to county elections records.

However, City Manager Mark Palesh said this week that there is no question she fulfills the city's residency requirement. Green's Auburn address has not been made available.

Green would not comment Friday on her resignation. In her letter, she thanked members of the review board and stated that they have followed proper procedures and policies.

Sennett Town Supervisor David Sikora also declined to comment Friday on Green's resignation.
