Happy New Year.
We have lots of news from our local churches to help get 2009 off to a good start.
#&149; Holy Family parish kicked off its 175th anniversary year celebration this past weekend on the feast day of The Holy Family. Dec. 28 was Sweatshirt Sunday where parishioners, and our beloved Father Dennis Shaw, proudly wore their Holy Family sweatshirts to Mass.
Bishop Matthew Clark will celebrate a special Mass on Sunday, Sept. 13, with a luncheon at the Holiday Inn to follow. Other activities include a golf tournament, alumni basketball game and a dinner- dance. Special thanks to the chairpersons who are helping: anniversary chairperson, Al Nicolella; athletics, Carl Festa Sr.; archives, Judy Janusz; fundraising, Joyce Martino; liturgy, Mary Warter; music and special events, Tom Techman and Trish Fields; outreach, Carol Kenny; social events, Leslie Leary, and sweatshirts, Margaret Lepak and Jack Burns.
#&149; The Auburn Catholic Pastoral Planning Group and the Human Services Coalition of Cayuga County are presenting a Community Services Fair from noon to 4 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 14, at Holy Family Church, 93 North St., Auburn. The purpose of this event is to help religious leaders of all denominations and/or their representatives respond to the needs present in the community by providing them with an opportunity to learn what organizations, agencies and services are available in Cayuga County and how to access those services. The day will include panels and information regarding health care assistance, mental health and substance abuse services, economic support and self-sufficiency. The day will also include time for lunch, networking, questions and answers. RSVP to Nancy at 252-7261 or e-mail fvasile@dor.org.
#&149; There will be a bloodmobile at Sacred Heart Parish Center on Melrose Road on Saturday, Jan. 17.
#&149; On Wednesday, Jan. 21, all the women of local churches are invited to attend a retreat at Stella Maris Retreat House in Skaneateles. Coffee and doughnuts will be available at 9 a.m. and a hot lunch will be served at noon. Father Steve Lape, formerly of Saint Mary's Church in Auburn, will be the facilitator and celebrate the holy sacrifice of the Mass at the conclusion of the retreat. The cost is $20 and reservations can be made by calling 252-7271.

#&149; On Sunday, Jan. 4, the Polish Falcon and Falconette Christmas Party will be held at the St. Hyacinth Parish Center at 1 p.m. Children 10 and younger are free if they are a member or children of members. The cost for grandchildren is $5. Each child receives a visit with Santa, a gift and a goodie bag. Pizza, cookies and soda and make-your-own sundaes will be served.
#&149; At 2 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 11, there will be a Deacon Vocational Information meeting at the Hibernians Club on Van Anden Street. This will be an informational gathering for those men who have wondered if they might be called to diaconal ministry. There is no obligation. There will be a brief program and a film, followed by refreshments and a question and answer period. RSVP to Deacon John Tomandl at 729-4668 or e-mail at prisondeacon@aol.com.
#&149; The children and youth of the Good Sheperd Catholic Community are having a Used Toy Drive to benefit the children of the community. They ask the community to gather unwanted toys, books, games, videos/DVDs and music CD's - in good condition - and bring them to the church Sunday, Jan. 4. If you have large items or outdoor toys to donate, please contact Debbie for pickup at 497-2049. Donations will be shared with community agencies and families in need. This is a wonderful way to share the spirit of Christmas and give new life to old toys.
Stay warm and safe and have a good week. Remember, God loves you so very much.
Special thanks to St. Alphonsus parish for this beautiful New Year's Prayer:
“As the dawn breaks on a New Year, let us give thanks for all we hold dear; our health, our family and our friends. Let us release our grudges, our anger and our pains, for these are nothing but binding chains. Let us live each day in the most loving of ways, the God-conscious way. Let us serve all who are in need, regardless of race, color or creed. Let us keep God of our own understanding in our hearts and to chant God's name each day. Let us lead the world from darkness to light, from falsehood to truth and from right to wrong. Let us remember that we are all one, embracing all, discriminating against none. May your year be filled with peace, prosperity and love. May God's blessings shower upon you and bestow upon each of you a bright, healthy and peaceful new year.”
