AUBURN - It's a girl - Auburn Memorial Hospital's first baby of the New Year, that is, born at 1:41 a.m.
New Year's Baby EllenMarie Sara Smith, daughter of Katharine and Richard Smith Jr., of Port Byron, weighed 7 lbs. 11.6 oz. She has two sisters, NolaAnn, 5, and EmmaLynn, 2 1/2. Dr. William Beck delivered the baby.
Katharine said the baby was not due until Monday, but she came a few days early.
“We were hoping for something special,” Katharine said.
EllenMarie was named after Richard's sister Judith Ellen and Katharine's mother, Marie. Her middle name, Sara, is the name of Katharine's sister and her best friend as well.
Katharine just graduated from SUNY Oswego with her bachelor's degree in Early Childhood Education, grades 1-6. Richard attends Cayuga Community College.
