District braces for drop in aid

We take special care during the holiday season to focus on our children, on our families and on those in need. We seek to keep alive the dreams and visions that especially energize and motivate the children among us. We spend time with family members and recognize the important role they play in our lives. And finally, we give of ourselves to help those in need to bring hope and comfort during difficult times.
In many ways the recent economic changes have heightened our awareness in all of these areas. As the holiday season has just passed, our focus on children, families and those in need should stay front and center as our state seeks to put in place a budget that calls for severe reductions in its funding for services. These new economic realities demand that all of us act responsibly and think strategically.

The Auburn School District, like all other school districts in the state, is facing a reduction in its state aid funding. The loss in revenue will be dealt with in a multi-faceted approach, taking into consideration that this is most likely not a one-year problem. All programs, services and methods of “doing business” will need to be evaluated for cost saving opportunities.

While spending reductions are inevitable, the district's educational vision for students will be the unwavering test for the appropriateness of any cost cutting measures. It is clear that as students, educators and community members, “we can make a difference” through education.

Our district priorities remain grounded in superior achievement and equity for all, literacy skills that support superior achievement, and a commitment to reduce gaps in student achievement.

To maintain a focus on our educational priorities in the face of economic pressures takes the support of the community. Confidence in the public education system, pride in our students and our schools, and involvement in developing long-term solutions will bring positive results for our students, our families and our community. As we move into the budget season, it will be important to keep a strategic focus and remember that a sound economy requires the opportunities that come from a sound educational system.
