The importance of love, forgiveness and wisdom within the community will be the topics of discussion during an upcoming lecture series sponsored by Auburn's Seymour Library.
Sheila Mikkelson, the library's director, said the event will give residents a chance to talk about how all three topics are connected together.

“I think because we live in an area where there is a prison, these are important issues for residents,” Mikkelson said. “From my experience here, there are issues of forgiveness with prisoners, prison families and prison guards and their families who are all living in the same place.”

The library is one of 50 libraries in the entire nation selected to participate in the lecture series, Mikkelson said. The series will include eight discussions with a corresponding book reading or movie screening.

Because there are only 25 copies of each book available, Mikkelson said people should sign up for a discussion ahead of time to ensure they get a copy.

The discussions are free and the only requirement to get a book is a library membership.

Lisa Carr, an adult services librarian, said that after reading the books or watching the movies, people will discuss how the different themes, such as wisdom and forgiveness, play into each other.

“Forgiveness doesn't happen without wisdom,” Carr said. “Wisdom comes with age and the passage of time. After a while someone may think, ‘Maybe it's time for me to move on past what I originally thought was unforgivable.' That only comes with wisdom.”

While a few residents may have read the books before, Carr said, this time people will be reading to specifically connect the books to the themes.

Visitors will also discuss the physical and mental benefits of the themes, especially forgiveness, Mikkelson said.

“Research has shown that forgiveness has health benefits for people,” Mikkelson said. “Mind and body both benefit when someone fully forgives another person. It can even help people who accept forgiveness. If people accept forgiveness, they are accepting guilt. If you are responsible for something you have to accept forgiveness for it.”
