I think it is sad that you can put somebody in prison for fighting somebody, but a girl can sleep with a child and only gets six months in jail. So you tell me how fair the system is.
I remember when JFK was killed -- I've lived through all the Kennedy candidates. They're good people and they're generous with the bootleg money that their father made way back when, but I think it's time to drop all this popular way-in-the-past stuff.
I know the Auburn leaders are not the sharpest tools in the shed, never have been. Do they ever question what all these tractor trailers are hauling up and down North Street?
I hope my tax money isn't helping to keep up that Seward museum. I think it should fall apart like the rest of South Street.

Honestly, it's just foolish to have them all written down in one convenient place, whether you take them with you or leave them home -- because it would be very convenient for a thief, like, say, your daughter's questionable new techie-geek boyfriend who is in the house legitimately and sees the address books sitting there....
Hackers, who hack into systems, are more likely to target some place with many people's info -- like the server of a bank or credit card company, though they do also target wireless home networks because so few people take any pains at all to secure their wireless networks at home. You can get software to easily hack the built-in security that comes with a home wireless setup -- if people even bother to activate even that much. That kind of hacking is called "war driving" -- as in many places hackers drive around with a laptop, wireless access equipment and this software until they detect an unsecured network allowing access through the air outside your home or business. Then they are in and you are toast.
Very seldom do hackers bother trying to grab info on route, as so many businesses have taken pains to secure the transmission. The weak point is how securely is the information stored once a business has it -- in which case it makes no difference whether you gave them that info over the internet, over the phone or in person.
The exception is at the gas pump -- many gas stations transmit the debit and credit card info from the point it is collected at the pump back to a server in the building -- and they don't always have it properly encrypted. War drivers can pick that up and run with it.
But last time I checked, physical access remained the most common way thieves obtain access to private information by far -- way more than hacking in over the net. Someone sees and copies down your password where you have it written down and you don't even know it's been stolen.
I don't claim to be the world's expert on network security, or identity theft, but I have more qualifications than some. I had to do a reasearch project on identity theft for a policy class in grad school, and I also took a whole grad course in network security. That was 7 years ago, and lots has changed, but the fundamentals are still the same, and I did get an A in the class. I've also worked with ITS both at Wells and here at Ithaca on network security issues, so I do know something about it. Again, there are people in the field who know a lot more than I do, but I am not speaking based only on little spots I've heard in the news. "

I found the address book easiest. I was keeping them in a spiral but the websites were harder to find after so many were added.

Once when I was flying home from a conference in DC, the airport staff tipped my purse over in the x-ray machine, losing my business card case. I didn't know until I got home that it was gone, as it had the stub to get out of the airport parking lot and I had to fuss to get out. Anyway, some weeks later, I got a package in the mail -- they had cleaned the machine and found my case down inside it -- along with a little address book with no identifying name which they assumed was mine since the items were together down inside the machine.
Inside that book were not only the addresses and phone numbers of everyone the owner knew, but there were the birthdays, sizes, social security numbers and more info on each of a bunch of related individuals. And there were passwords to all kinds of things including credit card websites. There was a sticky note with a phone number just inside, so I called and it turned out it was the woman's boss. She got in touch with me and I got the book back to her -- but all of her 5 adult children would have been in a whole lot of trouble if I had not been a honest person.
She was very appreciative and sent a nice thank you and small reward (I had not asked for any such thing) -- and told me she'd learned her lesson and would never keep such info written down much less carry it with her on a trip ever again.
There is a continuum -- at one end is convenience and at the other is security. The more convenient something is, the more likely it is to be not secure. "

Absolutely, cm -- I have seen how dependency can ruin formerly happy relationships because it breeds resentment -- on both sides. One person resents always having to carry the other one's load, and the other person resents always having to be beholden to someone else for everything. That's assuming the best intentions and one party isn't using the situation to manipulate the other. No, it's just better to always be able to support yourself. Sure, there are times when one has to lean on another -- spouses, family, friends, even neighbors -- but as long as it is short-term until you can get back on your feet again, as long as it is willingly available to the other if the tables are turned -- that's as should be. But being dependent is not a good thing for anyone.
Tree won't come down until after 12th Night -- that's Tuesday. It just takes too long to put it up to take it down too soon after Christmas/Solstice/Yule.
Time for a nice bowl of homemade broccoli cheddar soup and a bit of rest. Been going hard at it since Farmer Guy arrived to help with the painting at 4:45 AM! "

There are 11 which could be replaced on the first floor, three huge ones and one oversized which are pretty critical, and upstairs there are 9 more, 5 more important than the others, and these are mostly fairly standard size. There are a grand total of TWO double-paned insulation windows in place already, both standard sized.

Progress report: Door and trim painted, except window (I'm not removing the taped on plastic and re-doing it until the plastic comes off in the spring), then allowed to dry, then carefully taped with the blue painters tape. Then all Farmer Guy and I cut in all around the edges and filled in the tiny small spaces where the roller won't fit. Tomorrow early he'll come do the rolling, and then I can touch up any places around the edges which aren't quite perfect. Then carefully remove the tape, touch up any trim that needs it -- and put the furniture and draperies back in place. Hooray! "

FG: yes windows are costly-especially if you have to order them for an unusual size.
we paid 250.00 per window(2)for the playroom 2 yrs ago-BUT it did make a huge difference in eliminating drafts.
in the daughters new room-since we rebuilt the whole wall frame-we could now use standard window sizes which were about 150.00 each window.
..for the safety of their sister the darling boys informed us how easy it was for 'girls' to be snuck in--so we also raised the window frame!
plus added window alarms, just in case, Romeo brought a stool...lol.. "

New Year's is a milestone date for people to look back at the past year and forward to the next. Me, I don't mind New Year's but I lost my taste for Pink Floyd and can't stand them. I turn the radio off when they come on, and it really irritates me that The Wall plays Pink Floyd about once every hour -- there are lots and lots of other classic rock groups that no one group needs to be played every stinkin' hour. But when I complained, they told me that they have no control over their programming because they farm it out to some place in Iowa or Nebraska or something. What's the world coming to when even your local radio station isn't local?
I'm with you on Bush and Cheney, Karl -- they richly deserve it for all kinds of things, many of which I'll bet we don't even know -- but it's not too likely to happen. "

CM, u enjoy that scampi, sounds good, we are off to the buffet at Springside - they do a marvelous job there. Glad we got 4 new snow tires for the car as we are gonna need them tonight! I have learned that I am lousy with a roller. I may go back and do the touch-ups (primer uncovered spots I had missed in terms of a loose bit here, a rough spot there), then cut in the edges with a brush (I can do that quite well), maybe even paint the trim in white. Then find some friend of Farmer Guy who knows what he is doing to roll the middles -- I am just not good at it!
The ceilings in this house were "done" by the previous owners -- all that sort of patterned stucco stuff, with sparkles around the ceiling fans in a circle, if you take my meaning. They are all right, and I don't plan to mess with them.
In the little guest room, I won't monkey with the molding. Don't have the money for that right now anyway! But I have dreams for the first floor for "some day" -- I would like to replace the plain, utilitarian square white doorways/archways with real archways -- with rounded corners and wide carved-wood molding.
I used to live in the Sherwood Home for the Bewildered (aka the Emily Howland House in Sherwood, next to the school). I had the front parlor for my living room -- how elegant and wonderful! The molding there was reminiscent of classical Greek temples to match the columns on the porch and either side of the fireplace. It fit perfectly. That wouldn't go here, but I have a vision of natural wood moldings, carved with a combination of grooves and botanical patterns, arching gracefully over the top of each entryway. For now, that is a distant dream. The pea green had to go, but the next investment has to be in windows. I have several for which there are no storms, so it is just a single pane of glass between me and the outdoors -- brrr! I have plastic on some, but for the long term, I need to replace windows - and that's not cheap! Dreams will have to wait.
You eat up the shrimp, cm -- since I don't like it, that leaves more for you! I am also supposed to limit caffeine, so I don't eat chocolate. Luckily for me, I am one of those rare women who are NOT chocoholics and I go for years without it and don't miss it. I cut out coffee years ago too, but I do still imbibe Sabroso -- it's an off-brand Kahlua. Some of the off-brands are awful -- like sugar-syrup -- but Sabroso costs about half what Kahlua does and to me, it tastes even better. If you are buying yourself a new bottle at the liquor store, give it a try. I'll bet the Kahlua-Chocolate treat is very tasty, but you are right -- wicked bad calories.
However you all celebrate the new year, be sensible and drive safely. I'll surely be home and sound asleep myself.

Why would I think u were messing up your wall fixing method FG? Have at it sister and be amazed what a coat of primer will cover!! I still say the music will get you moving in ways not acheived b4. Consider stamping the walls for a sofisticated 'wallpaper' look. I found a fern leaf stamp the size of my hand that I put all over the walls in a same but darker color as the walls. Or another idea in old houses is if you have decent woodwork around doors/windows, try adding a surround of nice molding perhaps 12-15" from ceiling or at a constant level around the room in line with the highest piece of woodwork - here none are all the same height. Then that space can be painted a darker or contrasting color - or paint ceiling and that space and the molding sky blue...ideas? I have a million of 'em...
I, too, wondered about the Seward House comment above. There was a transfer of ownership from the Emerson Foundation to the Seward House recently so it may fall under tax dollars now? Perhaps the poster was being facetious in regards to how trucks are ruining South St pavement after all that work was done?
I am like cm also in enjoying the walls covered, however here its in a victorian fashion hung from picture rail and hooks and one room is dedicated as the art gallery hung with my own photos thru the years...I enter into contests at times... "

I don't like my walls packed, but I have prints, framed posters and even one real painting (which I did myself in the 7th grade). My favorite is a pair of Edward Gorey prints from The Blue Aspic -- men in tails and women in wild formal wear with a vaguely 1920s look, going up and down the grand staircase at the opera and also in the lobby. These scenes are the inspiration for the opening titles of the PBS Mystery! series and absolutely perfect at the turn at the landing on my stairs.
OK, the scraping is done. Not 100% perfect, but ever so much better than it was. From the innermost layer, there was poorly installed brown-paper drywall, with gaps between panels in some places. Then a layer (or possibly two) of paint. Then the thin wallpaper with a shiny pale beige background (to which subsequent layers did not stick well, which is good) and sprinklings of apple blossoms (where subsequent layers did stick some) in a sort of cottage-rose chintz, "shabby-chic" design. Over that was a layer of thick wallpaper, no idea what pattern and might even have been a solid color. Then a layer of paint AND a layer of primer AND another layer of paint, this last one the hideous screaming pea green.
The walls are now down to the shabby chic apple blossoms and ready to be spackled.
How does all this relate to the Two Cents news? Here's how -- I am trying to fix up my house so I don't live someplace crummy. What's with the idjit who posted in the starter comments about letting the Seward House fall apart? First of all, the person is wrong, because there are many homes and houses on South Street which have been fixed up and are being nicely maintained -- they are not "falling apart like the rest of South Street." Second of all, if YOU want to live in a sh*thole, buddy, that's your business, but most people would like to live in a town where there aren't too many decrepit, unmaintained buildings. Take your junkyard attitude and go live like a hermit in the mountains, far away from others, because we really don't want to live next door to someone who prefers a derelict setting. "

So, I expect to have all the green-painted paper off by 1:30 or 2 PM. Then I will go over everything and scrape or sand any stray bits of paperbacking. Then I'll wipe down any dust and crud and first fill the big holes with the heavier joint compound, then go back for the finer stuff with the lightweight spackle. Then we'll leave it overnight while I work on the lectures for the course I am going to be teaching.
