The chiropractic story

Christmas is over and the gifts are all opened. Did you like the gifts you received? Do you remember what gifts you gave to your loved ones last year?
Not exactly sure? It is common to forget about gifts that didn't have much significance whether you were the giver or receiver.

The most memorable gifts have stories behind them. Just like O. Henry's “The Gift of the Magi,” years can go by, but the warm feeling about the special connection between a gift and why it was given lasts longer than its fancy box and colorful wrapping. The shared story that bonds two people is more precious than the gift itself. This is the gift of a story.

Chiropractic healing also comes with the gift of a story. The story is about the desire to enhance the human experience. The story of chiropractic healing comes from “Henry Gray's Anatomy of the Human Body,” not to be confused with the TV show. How the very basic structures of the body are intricately united by the nervous system is an indispensible part of the story.

It also goes back to Greco-Roman culture with the saying, “Mens sana in corpore sano,” translated as a sane mind in a sound body. This describes how the physical state of the nervous system converges with the non-physical state of the mind to maintain well being.

Candice Pert, Ph.D, author of “Molecules of Emotion,” carries on the story of chiropractic healing by describing how emotions act on the body to modulate responses. The chiropractic adjustment untangles damaging responses at the physical and mental levels so we can experience our optimum quality of life.

This gift is enhanced when the receiver truly embraces the story. The experience of chiropractic is not in full bloom until the receiver gives his or her body an adequate opportunity. This is because we are very slow to heal due to the daily stressful conditions of modern life. When we are bombarded with continuous mechanical, chemical, and emotional insults, we often believe we have reached the plateau of healing. The chiropractic story can motivate us to persevere.

In my past columns I have not routinely focused on specific conditions that are helped by chiropractic because that is not the true purpose if its story is understood. Each of us has areas of our lives that need improving and relying on strict labels or diagnoses limits healing especially the gift of chiropractic healing.

This also holds true when making a New Year's resolution. We often force changes on ourselves because it is supposedly a good idea. Rather than fail because of this obligatory cultural ritual, we can realize our own inherent gifts of health and human potential that inspire us to thrive.

What is your gift as a unique individual? How do you use your gifts? I invite you to allow the gift of chiropractic into your life because it has a powerful story of hope. The chiropractic story motivates us to look forward to a bright future because we have great abilities that when nurtured will help us change the world.
