State Police have charged a second woman with assault in a case of child abuse that police said led to repeated injuries to a 2-year-old and a 5-year-old.
Tracy J. Doane, 28, of Hinman Road, Summer Hill, was arrested Wednesday and charged with second-degree assault and two counts of endangering the welfare of a child.
Police said the assault charge stems from injuries Doane caused to the 2-year-old and that the endangering charges were lodged because Doane left the two children in the care of another woman who she knew had assaulted them in the past.
Jamie S. Hopkins, of Penguin Trailer Park, Cortland, was charged earlier this month after a 5-year-old boy in her care was assaulted so severely that he had to undergo emergency surgery for a head wound, police said.
Police said that Hopkins head-butted the boy and then threw him into a TV, causing serious injuries.
She was charged with second-degree assault and endangering the welfare of a child and sent to the Cayuga County Jail, with bail set at $50,000.
Doane was arraigned before Aurelius Town Justice Raymond Lockwood Wednesday and sent to jail on $10,000 bail. She is scheduled to reappear in court at 7 p.m. Jan. 7.
Police said the injured boy has since been released from University Hospital in Syracuse and that both children are currently in foster care.
