For the men who will be picking up the slack for Santa Claus this year, few things can be as difficult as finding a good gift for a significant other.
Now in its second year, Gent's Night in Skaneateles will be a beneficial event for every man because they will not have to go out alone to look for a special and thoughtful gift for a loved one, said Cheri Haring of Skaneateles Artisans.

“Men may not always think in terms of color or style trends, and those are just two of the biggest difficulties they may have,” Haring said. “The men will have their wives or girlfriends make a Christmas list and we will have shopping assistants at each of the stores to help them make a tasteful selection. Sometimes when buying something that is supposed to be more meaningful or personal, people become unsure about their selections.”

Susan Dove, who also organized the event, sponsored by the Chamber of Commerce, said several downtown art, clothing, antique and jewelry stores will be open, and most will be providing refreshments. The stores will even gift-wrap selections.

“This is an opportunity for guys to get out and get all of their shopping done,” Dove said. “We decided to hold the event this close to Christmas because we know most guys tend to get their shopping done at the last minute.”

Between the 25 shops that will be participating in the event, Haring said the men should be able to find something for everybody on their Christmas list.

“Downtown Skaneateles has a lot of art, jewelry and gift shops that sell unique and thoughtful gifts,” Haring said. “I think art will be a big gift this year. People who want to buy something special and unique for Christmas will probably like local art.”

And with every purchase, shoppers will be entered into a free raffle to win one of two gift baskets tailored to meet a man's interest.

“There will be cologne, a golf hat, wine, a tie, gift cards and a bunch of other masculine stuff,” Haring said. “We (already did) this event for the girls, and they got a gift basket with perfume and other items, so this is a chance for the men to get something.”

While holiday shopping may be stressful, especially when there is pressure to give a meaningful gift to someone, Dove said this event was meant to create a fun, stress-free environment.

“It's supposed to be a fun night, with easy shopping,” Dove said. “There will be some music, food and drinks and shopping assistants at each store to help make selections. Last year, we had some bad weather during the event, but the people that came out had a ball.”
