A 14-year-old student at one of Auburn's alternative schools has been charged with misdemeanor possession of a firearm by the Auburn Police Department after he allegedly brought two unloaded handguns to school, police said.
To protect the child's identity, police would only say the school is not part of the Auburn Enlarged School District and is administered by Cayuga/Onondaga BOCES.
The child is accused of removing the firearms from a relative's gunsafe and concealing them in a bag before going to school on Dec. 12, police said. Detectives do not believe the child removed the guns from the bag while on school grounds.
The child told detectives he made sure the guns were unloaded and that he wanted to show them to a friend after school.
Police said the investigation started when the school's principal contacted the department and said he had information that a student had brought firearms on to school grounds. The child has cooperated with the investigation and police do not believe he had any ulterior motives.
The two handguns, which were registered with the family member's pistol permit, have been collected as evidence, police said.
The child's case has been forwarded to Cayuga County Family Court, police said.
