The Kalet building is an eyesore and instead of wasting any more money on it, it should be torn down. I don't know what you'll do with the land.

Mr. Cordileone says that "Lakeside Trading kept their gas at the lowest possible price." If that were true the price would be much, much lower.

The Cayugas have no problem using the roads that our tax monies build and maintain. Let them help pay for them.

Mr. Mills, it's time for you to stop patting yourself on the back, and find out why the sheriff's department is not giving own of Owasco residents the police protection that they need.

You should tear down the old nursing home on South Street. It will never reopen.

Yes! Thank you so much Mr. Budelmann and Mr. Swinehart for doing something our great state of New York could not get done -- one nation for equality.

" So, first alternate parking was 7 days a week, then they changed it to 5 days a week, but then they added the caveat that it was only 5 days a week in summer and back to 7 days a week in winter. It does make sense, but I can see how many people could easily miss one of those adjustments. Awfully glad I live in the boonies and can park just about anywhere I like as long as I don't obstruct the road.

As for the plows, they plow out the roads and plow in the cars -- whether they are in driveways or alongside the road, you can't win. If the roads are clear, it's because the snow is packing your car in, but that's just the way plows work. As long as they don't wipe out my mailbox again, I'll live with it. "

" In Ithaca, they forgive your first ticket if you haven't had one is something like 18 months. It's a very fair system -- you get a warning in case you didn't know or had some odd circumstance and only people who go on breaking the rules actually have to pay the fine.

They also have free parking for the first 2 hours in most parking garages -- and they have a much more vibrant and economically viable downtown than Auburn. True, it is a more generally affluent area overall, but Auburn could do a lot to be more user friendly in terms of parking. Instead, they take a harder and harder line, driving away all but a handful of diehard downtown regulars.

Hoist on your own petard! "

I was more worried over the stores NOT having what I had planned to buy-like last year!
BUT Kmart,Staples,Sports Authority, and 1/2 the mall stores I ventured to had every item and then some!

last year you couldnt find a Wii anything. This year I walked into Kmart, had my pick of any Wii, from games to systems!
(son wanted Guitar Hero-79.99 for bundle pack)

A sign of the economy?
I am expecting to see HUGE discounts Friday the 26th!

PS. since my store opened I have been told NO SALES after Xmas, Nadda! NONE!
I received a packet of 20%,30%,and 50% off signs from corporate on saturday. "

" I do not see any difference between our Governor and the Governor of Illinois. An article today about Suozzi possibly being chosen by Paterson for Hillary's seat states that, "His relationship with Paterson goes back very far and it's deep." Also written was "They were two young political princes who were raised and groomed to one day govern, Paterson is very comfortable with Suozzi." So, I see no difference between cash or a personal favor, the person with the power still receives some sort of enrichment. "

Farmer's Gal wrote on Dec 21, 2008 6:39 AM:

" One more thought for you, CCL -- if your credit is good, you might consider buying now while prices are incredibly low, and interest rates are way down too. In NYS, there is a program for first time home buyers that allows people with good credit to only have to put down 3%. You can also get "closing cost assistance" -- up to $5,000 in a loan which is forgiven if you live in the house yourself for 10 years.

If your credit is good, but you just don't have enough money to save up for a big downpayment, there's never been a better time to buy your own home and get out from under the thumbs of these abusive housing "managers." Right in Auburn there are decent smaller houses you could find for very low prices. If you think your credit might be good enough, go to a bank and see if you can be pre-qualified. Then take a look at one of the real estate sites online to see what's available. Just keep in mind that a bank will tell you that you can "afford" a house that costs a lot more than you can really afford. Knock off about 15-20% of what they tell you and start looking -- if you have good credit and a stead income. "

Farmer's Gal wrote on Dec 21, 2008 6:26 AM:

" It's just those kinds of pains that finally pushed me into buying my own place -- though for many, many years I did not have the option for financial reasons, which may well be your position too, CCL. The landlord lives out of town, so he "trusts" one of the tenants to be the "manager." That person uses his "position" to do as he pleases -- probably gets a break on his rent, then doesn't bother to do the maintenance he's telling the landlord he does, and what's more, he takes up the whole driveway and doesn't share. If you don't have direct access to the landlord, there's not much you can do except move -- which is often not a practical option either. Believe me, I've been there too! (Though I never had a car towed -- never lived in the city).

People without money are vulnerable to all levels of abuse. It's one of the reasons I get so mad when the more privileged types make nasty comments about people of lesser means. When you've worked hard to put together a life for yourself and your children, or whatever family you have, but it is a delicate balance, hanging by a shoestring, it doesn't take much to bring it crashing down. One day parking on the wrong side of the road because someone changed the rules and you didn't know -- and there goes $108 you needed for food and basic living expenses -- and at Christmas time too!

I can't tell you how many times things like that happened to my family, both when I was growing up with a divorced mom outside Detroit, and when I was living with my now-ex-husband and we were both underemployed and unable to find better work.

You have my empathy as well as my sympathy, and I hope your life circumstances improve in the new year. Keep plugging away. I lived hand-to-mouth many, many years, but finally got a break, so things CAN turn around. Best of luck to you! "

" BTW, why in the world would anyone think it was not a good idea to sell wine in grocery stores?

Back home in the Detroit area, we had local "party stores" -- they existed long before convenience stores and most of them were not connected to gas stations. Party stores are little neighborhood stores which sell party supplies -- food, drink, snacks, pop, etc. They also sell all the basics -- like diapers, tampons, milk, needle and thread, things like that. And you'll find one on about every third corner. You can buy beer and wine in party stores -- can't remember if they also sell hard liquor -- I left Detroit before I was of age and never bought such things there, though I can remember displays for beer and suchlike, and I remember asking my mom about Boone's Farm, which was sold in the grovery store.

Grocery stores already sell beer, so it isn't a no-alcohol thing -- why not wine? Especially here in Fingerlakes Wine Country? "

Sorry, Karl, but here I have to disagree with you. I'd bet dollars to donuts Obama has a skeleton or two in the closet as well -- we may or may not ever learn what it is, but I find it impossible to believe there are none. I still think he makes a better choice for President than the other so-called "option" we had, but that isn't saying much. He does have some good points, but also other points which worry me. For now, I am giving him the benefit of the doubt and will wait and watch, but not for a minute do I think he will be a flawless and wonderful-only President, nor do I believe anyone at that level is utterly pure and free of any taint of corruption. at times to get to the positive-- we having free will, might have to take the long way--life isnt always a shortcut!
If it were..we'd be pretty dumb individuals!
and probably still living in a cave.

karl: by the way ...how much of his 2 or 3 books is Obama 'sharing the wealth' with his voters?

I hope to see a copy of the 'check' he sent you! "

" Brew: for sure not my kind of fun!
being in 'hurricane state' I can relate to days of no power, loss of food, and CO poisonings.
Our deaths are heat related and your are cold related.

in watching news stories, It simply amazes me PEOPLE that choose to stay put in their homes thinking they are above possible death!
SADLY most of them elderly--who simply hate change even for a few days! OR they have pets that ARE their family and refuse to leave them behind.

Then the use of generators--should I say BAD USAGE! why do idiots place them in their livingrooms or garages?

someday I hope that each city would list their elderly/or they sign up to be 'adopted' by a family..with far away relatives signing them up, especially if they stubborn.
Not only would they have someone to check on them, but hopefully 'home' their pets, if they have to evacuate, most importantly convince them to go to a safe haven!

we cant control 'mother nature' but we can control our actions to her wrath! "

" Hey Karl--When Dich Cheney said he supported waterboarding, he was merely referring to his donation to the local surfing club. I think his grandson is a member. GOD--you are a drama queen Karl. Why haven't you been squaking about the Governor of Illiois? Why have you not been questioning if Obama had a relationship with his governor. Why have you not been qustioning Jessie Jackson for trying to raise 1 million dollars to buy the seat? (I'm sure his reputable, honest dad and Sharpton had nothing to do with that one) You love to pick and choose everything that is wrong in this world. "

" CM you are right about where I live. We are very pre-occupied this week by last weeks ice storms in NH and MA. One week later thousands still have no power and hundreds are in shelters. Utility crews are here from Canada, Ohio, PA, Maryland and Michigan. What a mess! Trees and powerlines are down everywhere. I was spared as the beach area stayed above freezing. At the peak 1 million households had no power. Frozen pipes, spoiled food, housefires, CO poisoning and stores losing sales at a peak time. The good in people is coming out. People are donating to shelters and reaching out to the elderly to check on their well being. Thankfully drivers are using caution as many traffic lights and street lights are out. Sounds like fun doesn't it? "

" pretty sure he's (brew) lives in Mass. near the border of New Hamp..
right brew?

I always thought the law was for the individual to PAY their taxes.

I know when casino visiting if you win under a certain amount YOU have to file it on your tax return, (as well as in Vegas)..NOT the casinos.
OVER 'XXXX' amount you have to sign a paper for the taxes and pay them on the spot!

so what makes the casinos any better than the gas stations? or buying cigs?

the truth is NY state is just abit tiffed more people are buying these products at the Indian owned locations and the state is losing money that they are SCREWING NY tax payers on.
be real..2.75 a pack in tax..
and the huge amounts on gas!

its no surprise NY is losing residents to other friendly states!

I'll bet we never see government officials pay tax on their hookers!

I would love to see someone like a Kennedy or Clintons itemized tax return--line for line!!! "

" If a store / business is Indian Owned and operating on Soverign, Indian Lands, then they should NOT have to pay taxes....period. I dont think anyone here needs a history lesson on why Reservations have tax-free rules in place....its the least this country can do after what we took from them.

With the whole Cayuga Indian Land Claim - since all of this is caught up in the courts, the businesses clamining theyre "Native" are basically taking advantage of the court-system dragging their feet. Isnt that the 'American Way' these days??

If people chose to go to these places to do business, then thats their right to do so. I guess if the state really wants to make it fair for everyone, then dont allow those who live outside of the reservation to shop / do business @ these places. Create a special ID card that allows certain people to buy Native goods / do business on Native Lands. BTW - guess that big Marijuana bust on the Onondaga Nation is gonna hurt that nations GDP! "

And they do take advantage of all the things the TAXPAYING citizens do.
By the way, when you go to New Hampshire, you're a tourist, not a resident. Move there and see if you would be exempt from taxes. "

" Sabrina, this is not a minority or racial issue. Second, your right what happened to equality? Anyone that ownes a big or small business has to pay sales tax, property tax, employment tax etc. Why should the owners of the Nation owned stores in Seneca County, Cayuga County, and the other counties not have to pay any taxes? If you owned a small business and had to pay all these taxes and the nations donot, do you call that fair and equal? Thats all that the small business owners and the other taxpayers want, to be fair and equal. "

" I use the roads in New Hampshire every day and I don't pay a cent for them except the interstates where they collect tolls. If the native americans don't use government services such as welfare or schools and not roads then they should pay taxes. they should work these things out with the state. If they want to use the schools and they don't pay school taxes then they should pay tuition. If they provide their own schools they should not pay school tax. That is sovereignty. You don't have to pay for services your nation doesn't use but if you want these services you pay. If you want to sell cigs on your property to US citizens without tax it is not their responsibility to collect US taxes. These rights and obligations need to worked out between the nations. The state government could use this discussion to end a lot of battles and put an end to property rights claims and come up with some compromises that will help the Native Americans and end the constant legal battles.
