On Wednesday, Dec. 10, it started snowing and sleet was falling around 1 p.m., just as the Weather Channel had predicted. And this went on all afternoon, with the temperature dropping (just like the Weather Channel said). On my way home at 5:30 p.m., the roads were like a sheet of ice.
Go figure! The city knew this weather was coming and knew that the roads would probably be slippery and icy, but God forbid you get the trucks out and put some salt down during the afternoon so the roads could be less treacherous. I witnessed two cars slide and get into accidents.
This is one of the busiest times in Auburn to travel with everyone coming home from work and it's like they could really care less. Now these people that smashed their car have to deal with the accident and insurance, etc., and they weren't even speeding. They were just trying to go home after a long day at work. All because our city is lazy and can't do what the taxpayers pay for (put a little salt down), and the roads would have been much better.
It's truly a disgrace that we live here, pay the high taxes we do, have the worst streets in central New York (potholes, etc.), and we have to deal with this.
Shame, shame to Auburn's city leaders. You're obviously not doing your job either, to ensure safety to the community and people that live here.
Does salt cost more than a life lost during an accident due to icy roads? I hope not! Oh, I forgot. You need five more police cars. Maybe that's why salt wasn't put down on the roads - we need the money for that!
