More child abuse charges could be filed against woman

A woman who was arrested this week by the state police on accusations she abused a 5-year-old boy may face additional charges, officials said.
Cayuga County District Attorney Jon Budelmann said troopers are investigating accusations that Jamie S. Hopkins, of Penguin Trailer Park, Cortland, also abused a 2-year-old child at a Hinman Road home in Summer Hill.

A third child in the home at the time was not harmed, Budelmann said.

Budelmann said Hopkins is accused of head-butting and throwing the 5-year-old into a TV, causing serious head injuries.

State police arrived at the residence Monday after emergency workers from the Homer Fire Department and Four Towns Ambulance received a report at 8:30 p.m. that a child had hit his head and was unconscious.

The child was transported to University Hospital, where he underwent emergency surgery to relieve brain pressure due to blood that had accumulated in his skull, Budelmann said.

The child was listed in stable condition, troopers said.

“Hopefully the child will pull through and there will be no permanent brain damage,” Budelmann said. “That's always a risk with a child and an injury like this.”

Budelmann said Hopkins was an acquaintance of the victim's mother, who was not in the room when the incident occurred.

Hopkins was arraigned in the Town of Aurelius Court Tuesday on the charges of second-degree assault and endangering the welfare of a child and was committed to the Cayuga County Jail on bail, which was set at $50,000 cash or $100,000 bond.

" My heart wretches from this story. Those parents don't realize that the abuse doesn't end once the physical pain is gone. If this innocent boy survives, a permanent scar will be inflicted for the remainder of his life. As a 34 year old survivor of child abuse, I deal with the psychological demons that haunt me daily because of the physical beatings that my parents inflicted upon me. I wish this child the best and I know that the parents will ultimately receive what they deserve.
