His 100th victory couldn't have come at a better time for the Blue Devils, as it was in a close match against Webster-Thomas. Cato-Meridian was down 27-25 with a minute left in Giacolone's match when he was able to take his opponent down for the win. The Blue Devils beat Webster-Thomas 28-27.
Giacolone, a junior who wrestled in the 112- and 119-pound weight classes, is only trailing Dan Rude for all-time wins with 126 at Cato-Meridian.
“He will eclipse the record barring any injuries,” Blue Devils coach Dan Butler said.
Giacolone finished the day with a 5-0 record, as did Joe Guiffrida (171/189 pounds) and Brandon Bosco (152). The Blue Devils' only team loss came in the final match against tournament-winner Hilton, 52-15.
“I'm glad we wrestled them at the end of the day,” Butler said. “They are a big school and exposed our flaws. Every kid they have on that team is solid. They showed us the little things you have to do to win.”
Prior to their loss, the Blue Devils defeated Auburn 54-12, Webster-Thomas 28-27, West Genesee 42-30 and Union Springs 53-15. Allen Holdridge (125), Nick Lalone (160) and Ethan Holt (171/187) each went 4-1 on the day.
Kyle Mapley (112/119) went 3-2 for the Blue Devils. Pat Walton (135), Ben Brown (145) and RC Gratton (215) all were 2-3.
“I never questioned their heart today,” Butler said. “It was a great learning experience for them, especially against Hilton.”
Auburn's Luke Netti was named his team's most outstanding wrestler as he went 2-3 at 119 pounds.
“He wrestled pretty well today,” Maroons coach John Alberici said.
James Murtari (130) went 3-2, while Mike Henn (152) and Ian Merrit (189) both went 2-3. Justin Gilmore (160) finished 2-2 for the Maroons.
“This tournament was a great experience for our kids,” Alberici said. “Dan Butler and the Cato-Meridian crew ran a great tournament. Our kids need to see competition like this. It was a good thing for them.”
Tom Weir led Union Springs with a 5-0 record at 215 pounds and was his team's most outstanding wrestler. The Wolves went 0-5 at the tournament, losing to Hilton 76-3, Auburn 45-21, Webster-Thomas 53-13, Cato-Meridian 53-13 and West Genesee 57-10.
Andy Klock (135) went 4-1, while Rich Thurston (140) finished 2-3 for the Wolves.
Union Springs travels to Thomas A. Edison Wednesday, Auburn travels to West Genesee Wednesday and Cato-Meridian (6-1) travels to Port Byron Thursday.
