The Auburn YMCA-WEIU hosted the 28th Annual Freeze-out Racquetball Tournament on Dec. 5-7.

The tournament was sponsored by Daut's, Custom Engraving and the Printery. The single-elimination tournament drew 86 entries in eight events. The matches consisted of two games to 15 points, with a tiebreaker to 11 points if necessary.

In men's 40 and over, Rochester's Tom Mastrodonato defeated Jeff Hanno of Auburn 15-5 and 15-14 for the first place game. Finishing as semifinalist are Jay Kilmer of Auburn and Don Gilbert of Syracuse.

In men's 50 and over, Oliver Hill of Syracuse defeated Auburn's Kevin Dautrich 15-10 and 15-6 for the first place in their age group. Greg Ray of Auburn and Rickhi Seemungal of Watertown finished as semifinalists.

In men's ‘A' action, Brian Berlin of Liverpool defeated Bob Gauthier of Auburn by scores of 15-8 and 15-2. Don Gilbert of Syracuse and Marty Handley of Buffalo finished as semifinalists.

Syracuse's Matt Gilbert defeated Syracuse's Sammy Newport 15-4 and 15-5 in men's ‘B' action. Watertown's Mike Piehl and Syracuse's Kevin Russell finished as semi-finalists.

In men's ‘C', Tom Mastrodonato Jr. of Rochester defeated Binghamton's Richard Gorshack 15-11 and 15-11. Joe Tagliaferre of King Ferry and Ricky Gates of Watertown finished as semi-finalists.

Dave Engle of Auburn defeated Julia Ormsby of Auburn 15-5 and 15-2 in Novice action. Trish Jubinville of Syracuse defeated Auburn's Josh Taylor 15-3 and 15-4 for third place.

In men's open ‘A' doubles, Jeff Hanno of Auburn and Brian Berlin of Liverpool defeated Auburn's Sam Vasile and Syracuse's Don Gilbert 15-12 and 15-11.

Auburn's Jay Kilmer and Bob Gauthier along with Rochester's Andy Ransco and Tom Mastrodonato finished as semi-finalists.

In men's open ‘B' doubles, Tim Locastro and Ed Tortorici of Auburn defeated Kareen Bannister of Auburn and John Bell of Cayuga 15-11, 11-15 and 11-8.

Sam Wolkoff of Skaneateles and Marty Siefka of Auburn were semi-finalists along with Gary McCartney and Shane Lawrence both of Auburn.
