Our View: Hits & Misses

HIT: To the local chapter of United Way, for topping its 2008 fundraising goal.
When the United Way of Cayuga County set its goal of $1,380,000 earlier this year, organization leaders probably never thought the economy would fall so far so fast.

But despite the poor national and local economies, Cayuga County residents still contributed to help the United Way surpass its goal by about $20,000.

This accomplishment shows that Cayuga County is still generous even in tough times. The result will be much-needed help to local charities and agencies that aid those who need it the most.

HIT: To the unveiling of project proposals from students involved in Blueprint II, an outgrowth of A Call to Action: A Blueprint for Our Region's Future. The projects, which deal with different areas of interest, might actually earn funding and become reality.

It's great to see our youth take an interest in the future of the community, especially in something that can help it.

Hopefully this kind of activity can be something that will help more young people envision their careers right here in Cayuga County.

MISS: To the accusation that a local man acted as a pimp for his wife and promoted prostitution in Auburn.

Prostitution is something usually associated with bigger cities, not small ones like Auburn.

We're glad to see local police agencies working to keep things like this from getting out of control.

HIT: To the Ugly Beard Contest going on at Jordan-Elbridge High School.

About 25 teachers and staff members at the school there have put down their razors in an effort to collect donations for the Jordan-Elbridge Food Bank.

Photographs of some of the scruffy staffers can be seen at www.uglybeards.org, where viewers are encouraged to cast votes by making donations.

The effort last year raised $3,000.
