Three people are vying for two seats on the Seymour Library Board of Trustees with a public vote slated for Monday.
Incumbent Jill Fandrich, who represents Auburn, is being challenged by Jeanne Cramer, while incumbent Susan Ahner, representing Sennett, is running unopposed. The terms are for four years.
The board is comprised of seven members and includes representatives from Auburn and the towns of Owasco and Sennett, whose taxpayers provide funding for the library.
The board is responsible for selecting the library director and working with him or her to ensure smooth operations, Library Director Sheila Mikkelson said. It meets once a month.
Fandrich, who is running for her second four-year term, spent the first two years with the previous director, who has since retired. Then she served on the search committee to find a new director, and found that position in Mikkelson, who brought with her new ideas about the library.
“I would like to stay on the board to continue to work through those changes,” she said. “It's just an exciting time at the library because we have such a wonderful history and so much good has happened here, but we're also building on that and have new things happening.”
Her challenger, Cramer, spent the last 27 years living a block and a half from the library, and for 20 of those years she worked the front desk.
“The library is my home,” she said.
While she is no longer under Seymour Library's employ, she believes joining its board allows her to still be involved.
“I met a lot of people after working the front desk,” she said. “I was on the front line. That is why I feel, if I get on the board, I can understand what the community wants in a library. I respect their needs and I am approachable to address their concerns.”

I've applied for mortgages that were less involved than a library card at the Seymour library. I think the organization needs to stress customer service. "
