ALBANY - New York Gov. David Paterson is ordering state officials to donate nearly 8,000 pheasants to a food bank for needy New Yorkers.
The pheasants will come from the state's Reynolds Game Farm near Ithaca, which state officials last week said will close. The farm bred pheasants for hunting.
Despite strong opposition by hunters and the businesses that serve them, Paterson said closing the facility will save $750,000. It will be part of his budget proposal Tuesday in which he will try to fill a deficit for the 2009-10 fiscal year projected to be as much as $15 billion.
Most of the pheasants, whose wings are clipped, couldn't be safety released, and breeders couldn't take them all, state officials said.
