In rare air

Basketball is sort of a family tradition for the Grinnells. And in terms of records, they like to keep them in the family.
Auburn senior Kelly Grinnell is on the brink of setting a few records herself. She currently is the school's third all-time leading scorer (941 points) and should eclipse the 1,000-point mark this season.

Grinnell also holds the Maroons' mark for career 3-pointers with 140.

And fittingly, it's that record that might mean a bit more. Kelly's sisters, Molly and Julie, both previously held the 3-point record at Auburn.

“They support me so much,” Kelly said. “I don't think I've gone a game in my whole high school career in which someone wasn't there supporting me, whether it be my mother or sisters. They've always been there for me whether I had a good game or bad game.”

And that's not the only family link for Kelly Grinnell. Her father, Gary, is the head coach of the girls varsity team.

He's also one of her biggest supporters.

“She was a gym rat since she was born,” Gary said. “Her brother would spend a lot of time with her and that just kind of rubbed off on her.”

While Kelly is in range of the 1,000-point plateau, she has loftier goals in mind.

Kelly has yet to experience a winning season at Auburn. In fact, the last winning season for the Maroons came in the late 1990s, when Julie Grinnell and former WNBA player Leigh Aziz played.

“One of my goals this year is to have a winning season,” Kelly said. “It's been awhile since we had one.”

It would be a fitting end to a career for Kelly and her teammates, who have all played together since eighth grade.

But it won't be easy.

There will be many road blocks, like in Wednesday's game against Baldwinsville.

Since Auburn has established another offensive threat, opponents are throwing double teams at Kelly nearly every night.

Baldwinsville effectively used this strategy against the Maroons, pulling out the win.

“They basically just double-covered her,” Gary said. “At times (they) even triple-covered her.”

One way to deal with the double teams is to be stronger with the ball and increase her assists.

While Kelly is a natural scorer, she plays point guard for the Maroons.

“I think she would rather play point,” Gary said. “She's more comfortable with that. She would rather have 15 assists and win than 15 points with a loss.”

For Kelly Grinnell, the ability to have her father as a coach has been something she hasn't let affect her on the court, while she often takes advantage of it off the court.

“She comes with me when I go to scout other teams,” Gary said. “She's a great kid and very coachable. I feel bad for her more. It's tough for her to play for her father, but she handles it well on the court.”

Kelly has been the Maroons' leader now for two years. She was named their captain as a junior and handles the role with a lot of respect.

“She is an excellent leader on and off the court,” Gary said.

Since her freshman season, Kelly has steadily improved to the point where her name appears all over the Auburn record books.

But more importantly, the experience she has amassed can be passed down to her younger teammates.

“The game play is so much different for the rookies,” she said. “JV and varsity are two different levels of play.”

And while Kelly Grinnell should inevitably set a few team records, she's inching her way up the state record book as well. She's currently 13th all-time in 3-point baskets in New York history.

It's easy to see why Gary Grinnell is so proud of his best player.

“She is the greatest female player I've ever coached,” he said.
