Despite discussions of a possible $4,842 raise sought by Cayuga County Treasurer James Orman, his salary will remain at the $65,000 that was budgeted for 2009.
The resolution that would increase the salary to $68,842 was pulled by Francis Mitchell, chairman of the Ways and Means Committee, after he and Orman met Tuesday to discuss the proposed raise.
Instead, the resolution will be reintroduced when the Legislature discusses the 2010 budget and Orman will get the $1,000 raise he was supposed to get, increasing his salary from $64,000 to $65,000.
“It would make more sense to do that,” Orman said. “We just thought it would be better to do it that way. That way, it's not a single item, it's in the 2010 budget talks.”
County Attorney Frederick Westphal will receive a $2,500 raise, putting his salary at $97,500 in 2009.
Westphal received the same raise from 2007 to 2008.
Chairman of the Legislature Roger Mills was in favor of giving Orman the additional $3,842 because it would put him more in line with those who hold similar positions, he said. He also supported Westphal's raise.
“I think they're certainly justified for the positions that those people hold within the county. I think they're comparable to what other people in similar positions earn, particularly in the case of the county treasurer,” Mills said.
Orman holds a similar position to the county clerk and the sheriff and his salary should be more aligned as well, Mills said.
County Clerk Sue Dwyer will receive a $2,321 raise this year putting her salary to $61,821 and Sheriff David Gould will get a $2,000 raise, making his salary $72,000.
Orman took office in 2006 and started off at $63,000. In April 2007, nearly $13,000 in cash was stolen from the county treasurer's office. In June 2008, Orman said he did not notice the money missing until six months later. Since then, the treasurer's office changed its policies.
Republican majority leader Michael Chapman, R-Cato, said that after further discussion, a decision was reached to pull the resolution and re-examine it at a later time.
“A number of us have talked with Jim about it and the timing of it ... I think it's just a matter of timing,” he said. “We wish to put it off at this time and discuss it in the future.”
