A gas-station cashier who reported being at gunpoint by a masked robber last week has been charged with grand larceny and falsely reporting an incident.
State Police in Auburn said Elizabeth Cardinale, 40, of 70 West St., Auburn, has been charged along with Raymond Ryle, 42, of 108 Janet St., Auburn, in connection with the theft.

Cardinale told police on Dec. 4 that a man wearing black clothes and carrying a handgun had entered the store demanding money and that she'd given him at least $900 before he fled.

Police on Thursday said that Cardinale was released on an appearance ticket after being charged with fourth-degree grand larceny and third-degree falsely reporting an incident and that Ryle has been sent to the Cayuga County Jail on charges of fourth-degree grand larceny and fifth-degree conspiracy.

Cardinale was reported to be so shaken on the night of the reported robbery that she was transported to Auburn Memorial Hospital, and police had said they were looking for a thin 6-foot man who had been wearing a black mask that night.

" Check the archives, I called this one. No cStore clerk should have $900 on hand. Something was wrong. If you don't use the drop safe you are the first one considered a suspect in a robbery. This should be a lesson to all cashiers. Use your drop safe or call a mgr for a pick from your register. It will save you from accusations in case of theft. Protect your job. "

" And to think people were concerned for her, too. No wonder why she had so much $ on hand. What a piece of work. "
