Cobb picks up quick pin as Port Byron tops LaFayette on mats

In the 140-pound weight class, Christian Cobb pinned his opponent in 54 seconds to lead the Port Byron wrestling team over LaFayette 45-30 Tuesday.
Also winning by pin was Ryan Eldridge (152 pounds) in 5:05 while Mitch Janes (130) won by a 7-0 decision.

Justin Quimby (189), Ray Cereo (215), Tyler Wellington (112), Richard Martinez (119) and Caleb Green (125) all won by forfeit.

Port Byron (2-0) wrestles at Jordan-Elbridge Friday.

BOYS BASKETBALL

Union Springs 53, Thomas Edison 43

Michael Bean led the Wolves to their second straight win with 17 points and nine rebounds. Ryan Fronce put in eight points, while Jason Schenck sank six points, had five assists and came down with four rebounds.

Union Springs (2-1) heads to Moravia on Friday.

Utica Proctor 68, Auburn 58

Kenny Byrd led the Maroons with 17 points, while Malcolm Bryant tallied 15. Julaun Richardson sank nine points in the loss.

Auburn (0-3) hosts Johnson City on Friday.

Madison 39, Tyburn Academy 37

The Crusaders led 20-12 at the half but couldn't hold on to it as Madison rallied back. Pacing Tyburn were Cody Cottrell and Spencer Blackman with 12 points each.

The Crusaders (0-5) travel to Cincinattus Dec. 19.

Lansing 61, Moravia 45

The Blue Devils were paced by Dillon Langtry who collected 14 points, Greg Pasho added 10 points and TJ powers finished with five points and 10 rebounds.

Moravia (2-1) hosts Union Springs Friday.

Odessa-Montour 65, Southern Cayuga 46

Bryan VanNostrand led the Chiefs with 16 points while Anthony Espinosa finished with 13 points.

Southern Cayuga (1-2) travels to Newfield Friday.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Jordan-Elbridge 44, Solvay 25

Kate Dungey led the Eagles with 19 points and five steals, Kelsey Richardson added seven points and five steals, Liz Caspari collected five points and 11 rebounds and Molly Hourigan tallied five points.

Jordan-Elbridge (2-1) plays at Marcellus Friday.

Union Springs 50, Thomas Edison 31

The Wolves totaled 24 steals in a game where they tallied 34 points in the second half to seal their first victory of the season.

Leading the Wolves were Alexa Schooley, who earned 13 points, Molly Clifford with11 points, Michelle Wilmot with nine points and Casey Emmett with eight points and 10 rebounds.

Union Springs (1-2) hosts Moravia Friday.

Lansing 50, Moravia 37

Deanna Drake led the Blue Devils with 17 points, while Claire Hunsinger contributed 13.

Moravia heads to Union Springs Friday.

Cazenovia 64, Skaneateles 19

Sophomore Jordan Dudden led the young Lakers with six points, while Katherine Pille and Erica Tardiff each scored four.

“They're probably the best team in our league,” Lakers coach Bob Braunitzer said. “We're working at it.”

Skaneateles (0-3) heads to Homer on Tuesday.

Odessa-Montour 69, Southern Cayuga 53

Beth Rocker, Lianna May and Hillary Chidsey each contributed 12 points to pace the Chiefs.

Also scoring for Southern Cayuga were Felicia Allen with eight points, Marissa Burns added four points, Ashley Bergenstock tallied three points and Stephanie Morse finished with two.

The Chiefs (0-3) host Newfield Friday.

SWIMMING

New Hartford 98, Weedsport 72

Mike Reese won the 200 freestyle (2:03.89) and the 500 freestyle (5:40.63), while Matt Crowley won the 200 IM (2:25.13) and Sean Wignall came in first in the 50 freestyle (25.02).

Nathan Earl took the 100 freestyle (53.84) and the 100 backstroke (1:01.39). Earl, Crowley, Reese and Wignall won the 400 freestyle relay (3:49.40).

Waverly 49, Southern Cayuga 44

The Chiefs came close to winning their first meet, but in the last event of the evening, Allen Aikstrom, Luke Cook, Thomas Fessenden and Jim Weber touched in a close second in the 400 freestyle (4:12.53).

The quartet also finished second in the 200 medley relay (2:12.92). Gavin Ludemann won the 200 freestyle (2:38.07), just ahead of teammate Phil Littlejohn (2:49.87). Wikstrom finished second (2:55.27) in the 200 IM, Cook took first in the 50 freestyle (27.31) and Weber won the 100 freestyle (59.23), ahead of second-place Ludemann (1:09.79).

Sam Ayers, Ludemann, Littlejohn and Weber finished first in the 200 freestyle relay (2:00.65) and Fessenden took second in the 100 breaststroke (1:17.00). The Chiefs (0-3) are at Odessa-Montour on Monday.

BOYS HOCKEY

Ithaca 5, Auburn 2

Reggie Townsend scored both goals for the Maroons, with Matt Festa assisting once to pace Auburn in the late scoring contest.

Auburn trailed only 1-0 after two periods before losing grip on its defense.

Steve Komanecky collected 26 saves for the Maroons.

Auburn (2-5) hosts Cazenovia today.
