Hammersley's 18 points and nine rebounds led the Warriors to a 53-46 victory over the Panthers Tuesday.
“That's her leadership,” Warriors coach Chris Vargason said. “She just takes over and scores points.”
Aside from Hammersley, Weedsport's scoring was spread out.
Allison Roosa led the Warriors on the boards with 11 rebounds, while also scoring 10 points. Margaret Roberts scored 10 points and had nine rebounds, while Brittany LaForce scored nine points, hauled in seven rebounds and had four assists.
“The thing is if you only have one shooter, it's easier for teams to defend against you” Vargason said. “This way they can't focus solely on just one player.”
That proved to be the problem for Port Byron as they went into the half down 27-21. But in the third quarter, the Panthers went on a 7-0 run to chop the deficit to three points, but it was the closest they would get.
“Turnovers plagued us,” Panthers coach Mindy Gilbert said. “The kids fought hard to the end, but we dug ourselves into the hole. We had way too many missed opportunities
The Warriors' defense was able to force a lot of those turnovers due to an active man-to-man defense. They held the Panthers scoreless for the first 2.5 minutes of the fourth quarter. They were only down three at that point.
“That flow kind of set the tone for our offense,” Vargason said.
Ali Short scored 12 to lead the Panthers and had eight rebounds. Shelby Gilbert scored nine, had five assists and Sarah Lombardo also scored nine. Nica Dare finished with eight points.
The distance between the two schools was an incentive for both teams.
“I thought the ballgame was great, from beginning until the end,” Vargason said. “Both kids came out to get a win. Port Byron is a good ball team.”
Port Byron (1-2) returns home Thursday to another familiar school, Cato-Meridian.
“We just need mental toughness,” Mindy Gilbert said. “We have to be prepared coming off of this loss and look forward - give it our all next game.”
Weedsport (3-2 overall, 2-1 in league) travels to Pulaski Thursday.
