Not one retail or wholesale store has ever ordered anything that was delivered in a garbage truck from New York City. Save the land, close the dump!
Kudos to the mayor of Tully on his questions: why do we need the county legislators and what do they do for us?
Maybe the truckers will take some advice from the Indians and they'll know how to butter up the governor and they'll be able to use the roads they ought to be able to use in the first place --- since we all pay taxes and they're New York state highways.
They're holding a poor woman responsible for tax evasion, when the governors are allowing the Indians to get away with it.

" Sorry C.V.N., I just caught the article about the Illinois Governor. I thought it was common knowledge that most people get into politics because of the rewards once they leave office. Presidents now make a small fortune for speaking engagements and book deals. Laura Bush will get a nice tidy sum for her book about "dubya". "
Thats just it, once they leave office they are free to persue anything they'd like but trying to basically sell a senate seat and get writers and editors fired because you don't like what they had written about you goes beyond the pale.
I find it interesting (frightening actually) that our incoming president has had so many connections with criminals and radicals (Ayers, Rezko, Wright, Farrahkan). I was always told that you are known by the company you keep. "

BTW, I like dogs too, though we currently have a problem dog Farmer Guy's daughter dumped on him. The dog is no good with cats. You wouldn't be interested in a English springer spaniel, 5 years old, fixed, with papers? He's not a bad dog, just not good with cats and he's causing endless trouble at the farm. We've been trying to place him with an agency, but they are dragging it out, and Farmer Guy is pretty close to putting him down and having done with it. We'd both rather he found a good home. If there are any seriously interested parties, let me know and I'll find a way for us to be in touch. "

I'm hoping to get a tree this weekend -- last several years I've purchased my tree from one of Farmer Guy's young friends who helps him with hay loading. This guy's family cuts a few trees each year -- maybe a dozen or so? -- and people buy them on word-of-mouth -- I've paid $10-$15 for perfect trees I've loved. This year it will go in my new house -- if I had thought of it sooner (enough time to make plans and get out invitations), I would have planned a holiday open house, esp. for friends who weren't able to make it to my other party (but also for those who did).
Instead, perhaps I can just extend a blanket invitation for people to stop by whenever I am home.
How about painting the same color as the bottom? I've seen some pretty tacky paint jobs where people try to get cute. There were photos in a drawer of my new home when I bought it of renovations done back in the 70s and 80s. Oh my God. The kitched was done in 3 different tiny brown print wallpapers, including all the cupboards. Hideous! Most of the other rooms had top and bottom 2 different wallpapers, also in prints, mostly brown.
I do like brown, but this house was grotesque. As much as I dislike the screaming pea green in what was a toddler girl's bedroom, the rest of the house has mostly nice colors and the people immediately before me did everyone a huge favor painting over that disgusting wallpaper. (Of course, now I have to figure out the best way to get two layers of painted-over wallpaper off the pea-green room's walls, as I finally broke down and bought the plus bedding and window treatments I want for the room -- on sale with a discount on top -- comforter, shams, sheets, pillowcases, bedskirt, window panels and valence, shipping, handling and tax all matching, delivered, all for under $95)
OOPS! I see the Governor of Illinois has been arrested -- for stuff a lot worse than visiting a call girl. OOPS! I see some goofus accidentally left Visanthe Sciancoe in the picture in the lockerroom barely wearing a towel (I noticed that live and wondered -- sure enough, someone is apologizing this morning!) "

My apologies to the folks who are happily living in mobile homes -- no offense intended.
I have a lovely two story, 3-bedroom house built in 1870 and very well maintained ever since. I bought it all on my own and am very proud of the accomplishment -- so your attempted insult just shows your ignorance and lack of manners.
How much is anyone's freedom worth when they have been wrongfully imprisioned for years and dragged through the mud in public? I don't know that I'd want to put a dollar amount on it, but the man deserves some kind of settlement. But to the best of my knowledge, Burress has never been in trouble for drugs or alcohol or any violent crimes like dogfighting or punching a woman in the face at a nightclub.
All of which demonstrates to my mind the need for judge and jury in each case to consider the unique and individual circumstances and for the sentence to be appropriate to the crime -- not mandatory from the get-go. "

I spent some time this morning reading up on the details of what went down, and it just does not sound like anything sinister and more along the lines of poor judgment -- not totally idiotic judgment, but poor choices -- on Burress' part. What Pierce did was perfectly logical to me -- his friend, whom he doesn't know even has a gun until it goes off, shoots himself in the thigh. He gets him to the car to take him to the hospital, and on the way, calls the team trainer to ask which hospital, and to notify the team who in turn notifies the league, who in turn are supposed to notify the police. They are surely used to a chain of command when anything comes up that might have to do with the media at some level, and the police as well. Pierce made the calls on the way to the hospital.
As they were about to pull away, the club's security person, who had grabbed the gun and unloaded it almost immediately after it went off, brought the gun to the car and says, What do you want me to do with this. The two players are focussed on getting the injured guy to the hospital, so the guard tosses the gun in the glove box and off they go.
Anyone who has ever been in an emergency room with a serious injury can tell you how surreal the whole thing is, and how things you'd think of right away are not the focus of the moment.
And no one except Tiki Barber has made an issue of pointing out that Burress didn't carry this gun around all the time -- his teammate, Steve Smith, had just been robbed at gunpoint the previous week and the whole team had been talking about that incident.
Burress: Should have gotten his registration and permit transferred to New York when he moved from Florida. He should have made sure he kept it current. However, if he had kept the concealed weapon permit up-to-date for this state, he would not have been breaking the law to have it with him in just the manner he did when it went off. He messed up on the paperwork and bureaucratic process, and, in my opinion, he messed up to carry it at all when he was out drinking at 1:30 AM (not the best thing for any athlete to be doing) -- although reports indicate they ordered only one drink apiece, hardly what you'd calling boozing.
Because he is a celebrity and kids look up to him, he should indeed be punished - where it hurts, in terms of playing football. But a mandatory 3 1/2 years in prison is just not appropriate for this incident. "

Just for the record -- I don't think Burress should get special consideration because he is a star football player. I don't think the law is right as it is applied to ANYONE. First, it starts with the shot. A lot of guys just don't care to wait and take only a killing shot, and will just shoot a deer anywhere just to get it, and then the deer runs, bleeds, and sometimes is gut-shot, and that can horribly taint the meat. I waited until I could drop it with one shot--it took around twenty-five minutes of nerve-wracking patience for mine to come within a good range, without obstructions in the line of my bullet's path.
Secondly, when you get it, you must gut it immediately, and haul it out of the woods.
Then butcher it as soon as possible. A lot of guys like to "show it off" outside their house--that just lets the meat rot.
And you have to mix the venison with a little pork--it's so lean, it will fall apart on the pan if you try to make a burger with it. Steaks are not a problem, however. "

Farmer's Gal wrote on Dec 5, 2008 11:08 AM:
Hey, Sports Fans -- well, I don't see much from folks here about sports, actually. But the other day I heard an interview with Tiki Barber (former RB for the NY Giants, now retired) that Plaxico Burress (WR for the NYG, currently suspended and awaiting legal action for carrying a loaded, unregistered (in NYS) gun with which he accidentally shot himself in the thigh) was carrying a gun because his teammate, WR Steve Smith, had just been robbed at gunpoint a week earlier. Tiki says Plax should have hired someone with a legal permit to carry a gun to watch his back instead of carrying one himself (not to mention he should have found out the differences in gun permitting between Florida and New York before he brought his gun up here at all) -- but it adds an interesting twist.
Tiki is also in agreement with me that this needs to be Plax's last season with the Giants.
(I also saw something about Burress' suspension putting the Giants in jeopardy for something to do with salary caps, which I just don't get).
But here's the broader implication part -- because in NYS carrying a loaded unregistered gun will get you a min sentence of 3 1/2 years in jail, if he's found guilty, that's pretty harsh for a guy who did something stupid but it's not like he was robbing a bank, or shooting his buddy on purpose, or pistol-whipping his wife ... or involved in dog fighting and cruelling killing animals for "sport."
How come Michael Vick will get out with, what, 18 mos? -- and Burress is facing min 3 1/2 years?
Don't get me wrong -- he did something stupid and deserves some punishment, but it just isn't the same magnitude. The automatic sentence for this particular charge seems a bad idea to me -- for anyone, not just because this guy is a celebrity. I'd feel the same way if the guy were an unknown plumber from Hoboken. There are circumstance and there are circumstances, and some of them would warrant a min 3 1/2 year sentence -- and some would not. "

I was in Pennsylvania with Dad, hunting last week....sorry I missed my "Murray Lynch" letter.
Got a nice, big 8-pointer on the first day, 3:30 PM, with one shot from my .308, dropped him right in his tracks. That's the way to do it!
Lotsa lean, healthy venison for the next year! "

Dinner was a disappointment -- esp after waiting so long (Farmer Guy got the gift certificate almost a year ago). The restaurant-which-shall-remain-nameless in this post used to be a place I'd go every so often, esp. on Monday nights -- one of the few places open on Mondays. It isn't any more. The dining room had reduced the number of tables so the formerly cozy room felt grubby and half-empty. You used to get vegetable of the day with your meal -- now it is blacked out on all the menus. You used to get a big basket of assorted breads -- now you get 1/3 loaf, sliced, wrapped in a napkin and served by placing this ungainly napkin wad on top of a basket of butter pats. You used to get pickled vegetable relish as an automatic appetizer -- along with the veggies on the menu with dinner, it's gone. Farmer Guy wouldn't finish his meatball -- said it was so nasty he wouldn't take it home to the cats. (My steak was fine). The waitress was very nice, and very pleasant, but not an esp. good waitress -- Farmer Guy spent 10+ minutes trying to get her attention to get him another drink (2 waitresses with 4 tables at the time) until finally an older woman came over and took care of him. The (decaf) coffee was tasteless and lukewarm. And the dining room was chilly, like the heat was barely on.
I can see where businesses are forced to cut corners in the current economy, but at some point, you cut more than corners. We were glad we were on a gift certificate and won't be returning, much less would be PAY for a meal there.
We did run into friends on our way out and had a lot of fun standing at the bar chatting, so the evening was not a total bust. But how very sad -- this restaurant has been a staple "nice place to go out to dinner" for a very long time in Auburn -- last night was like finding an old friend in the Poor House. "
