Arcuri: Campaign promises a realpriority

Monday, December 8, 2008 11:24 PM EST

Each Thursday, we put one of our local newsmakers On The Spot. This week: Congressman Michael Arcuri
This week's question: What message would you like to send to the nearly 50 percent of voters who chose your opponent this year?

Being re-elected as your congressman is the honor of a lifetime. I greatly appreciate the opportunity to continue my fight for farmers, teachers, small business owners #- everyone in the 24th Congressional District. I assure you I will continue to focus on issues like the economy and health care, issues important to our families and the future of Cayuga County.

In the past two years, I made Cayuga County a top priority, opening an office in Auburn and focusing on issues that are important to the region. I made tax cuts and helping new businesses like Saratoga Cheese a priority. I fought for local dairy farmers and to protect Social Security.

Over the next two years, I will continue to help local families keep more of their money and allow small businesses to succeed. In the same way I hosted an agricultural forum in Auburn last year before the Farm Bill, I hosted a transportation roundtable this year to hear about local priorities before consideration of the Federal Highway Bill.

My position on the Transportation Committee will help me secure critical funding to improve roads, make our bridges safer and get our railroads running efficiently.

I will continue to work with Cayuga Community College, businesses, labor and local communities to grow our alternative energy economy, creating jobs and lowering energy costs. Auburn and Cayuga County are already on the frontlines of alternative energy generation and we must keep moving forward. We are perfectly poised to create a “green” economy with good-paying “green” jobs.

Most importantly, I want to thank everyone who voted in this election, regardless of who you voted for. Our democracy is the strongest in the world because we are free to participate in our government. Serving as your Congressman is not a job I take lightly.

I consider it to be the greatest honor. I will continue to work as hard as I possibly can to make you as proud of the job I do for you as we are of our remarkable community, our home.

" Arcuri's response tells the story---he still doesn't get it. Rather than be humbled by the election results and concede he needs to do better, he defends his record. Staying anchored to this position says we can expect more of the same...Democrats for Richard Hanna in 2010! "

" Arcuri talks about helping local families to keep more of their money, allowing small businesses to succeed, and securing critical funding to improve roads, but has done absolutely nothing about a critical issue that addresses all these of these areas simultaneously: Indian tribal tax evasion and flouting of both state and federal laws.

The Oneida Indian tribe’s Turning Stone Casino lies within Arcuri’s district, but he isn’t at all concerned that it continues to operate in complete violation of both state and federal law. The casino isn’t on Indian lands and the tribe has no valid gaming compact with the state, both of which violate the federal Indian Gaming Regulatory Act. Where’s Arcuri?

One of the most crucial issues facing Arcuri’s constituents is land-into-trust. Where’s Arcuri? He is nowhere to be found.

Profoundly flawed federal Indian policy continues to destroy the rights of thousands of his constituents, destroy free enterprise, and destroy the social and economic fabric of his district. Is he going to do anything about it? No, he isn’t even going to talk about it! He was a “do nothing” District Attorney for Oneida County, and he is now a “do nothing” congressman for thousands of Central New Yorkers. "

" In true Democrat style, Arcuri doesn't answer the question AT ALL. Here's a paraphrase of what Arcuir said: "Blah, blah, blah, screw you who didn't vote for me." Recently Arcuri was given an award in Cortland for his support of community based health centers. Noble cause indeed. What was missed was his continuing desire to push a universal health care system on all of us whether we want one or not! I think he also missed the headlines about Russia's navy planting carriers not far from the USA. Mother Russia's economists and newsmakers are forecasting the downfall of the USA because of our financial and political divisions. If this guy and others like him get their way, the gazillion dollar bailout will look like a trip to the dollar store! I hope for our children's sake that the governement officials will take a good look around and realize that they're focused on the wrong things. It's time for individuals to get a grip on their lives, their spending, and their patriotism: We better make this country strong again, or we won't have one to worry about. "
