After Lake Side raid, it's time to leave Indians alone

Monday, December 8, 2008 11:24 PM EST

In regards to Lake Side Trading, I think things are getting out of control.
When gas prices hit an all-time high and the various gas companies were price gouging - Lakeside Trading kept their gas at the lowest possible price.

Now because people go there and buy more than two cartons of cigarettes at a time, the sheriff's department is ordered to confiscate all the cigarettes!

I realize that Lakeside Trading is not on “Indian Land” per se, but let me remind everyone, they were here first.

All of the land belonged to them until our ancestors came to “visit,” moved in, and decided to take.

New York is already one of the highest taxed states.

How much more can New Yorkers pay and how long before New Yorkers decide to desert their homes and move out of state?

I think it's time to leave the Indians alone!!

" Mr. Cordileone - The area now know as Central New York originally belonged to the Algonquin tribes. These people were violently driven from their land by the Iroquois nation, of whom the Cayuga tribe is a member. So, your statement that "they were here first" is incorrect. Obviously, the Cayugas would prefer not to acknowledge this fact, as it would undermine their revisionist version of history and compromise their petition to have the federal government place their land purchases into trust.

Wow, you're really buying into their propaganda, aren't you? "

" Yes drive 15 miles from Auburn to save 3 cents on gas. That makes a lot of sense. If all taxes were collected on non-indian sales then maybe the tax burden in this state would be less since an estimated 1b a year are lost in state taxes from sales at indian run joints. Maybe brainy people like yourself should leave the discussion to people who actually have a pulse. "

" and to add: when u look at the price of taxed gas vs the price at places like Lakeside (Indian run), the price is only a few cents less. Gas tax is a phenomial portion of the total gas price. So non Indian people that frequent these stores are only shooting themselves and the rest of us in the foot. Truly what is their savings? "

" Maybe when they comply with the law, they will be left alone. The quantity of cigarettes they had on hand was SLIGHTLY more than allowed. As for keeping their gas prices low, there might be a tax advantage there. Also, I don't know how often they are checked by weights and measures, but when I buy a gallon of gas, I want a GALLON. "

" Their prices appear to be low because they don't pay taxes and everyone else does. Someone has to make up for the indians breaking the law. So others pay more taxes. Including you Dom. Its time for th indians to qkuit being outlaws.
Who was here first doesn't matter. We are all here now and we have to follow the same laws and live together. Quit living in the past. "
