An administrative law judge is recommending the state Public Service Commission adopt a new area code overlay district to deal with the impending shortage of numbers in the 315 area.
The PSC had been weighing options that included establishing a new area code by splitting the existing 315 region. The judge's recommendation is now open to public comment.
The PSC said the overlay option will allow people to keep their existing 315 phone numbers. New numbers will be given a new area code. All calls within the region would require the caller to dial the full phone number.
The PSC will make the final decision on how to proceed.
Public comments can be sent to Jaclyn A. Brilling, Secretary, Public Service Commission, Three Empire State Plaza, Albany, NY 12223-1350. Comments should refer to "Case 07-C-1486-315 Area Code."
In addition, a toll-free opinion line can be called at 1-800-335-2120 or comments can be submitted via the "PSC Comment Form" in the "Consumer Assistance" file accessed through the Commission's www.AskPSC.com Web site.
Deadline for comments is Dec. 31.
