Auburn teachers, district reach agreement on holiday paycheck dispute

Teachers with the Auburn Enlarged City School District may receive their first paycheck of the new year just before they leave for the holidays.
Auburn Teachers Association President Sally Jo Widmer and Superintendent J.D. Pabis said the two sides have reached an agreement that will allow the teachers to receive their paycheck that was originally scheduled to be released on Jan. 2, 2008, on Dec. 23 instead.

“We've come to an agreement and we'll review it in the early part of next week with both parties,” Pabis said.

Pabis said the agreement will be in writing on Tuesday, but would not elaborate any further.

The ATA filed a grievance last month after Pabis said a 1962 state Comptroller decision stated that school districts do not have to pay their teachers before they leave for a holiday vacation.

According to a clause in the teachers' current contract, when a payday falls on a vacation, the paycheck is supposed to be released on the last day of school before the break, Widmer said. The practice has only been broken twice in the past 40 years, with the association filing grievances each time.

Widmer previously said the ATA declined a request from the district last May to waive the contract language requiring the payment before the holiday break.

During a second meeting on Nov. 6, the district said the checks would not be issued on Dec. 23.

“We appreciate the board's decision to pay us before the break,” Widmer said. “This agreement means we won't be going to arbitration, which would have been a moot point because this situation would not have been resolved until after the holidays.”

" Where is the reasoning here? If it is a part of a signed contract then what is the problem? If the contract says they get a check before they leave for vacation then why is the school system dragging it's feet? And as far as bizarre boy if you had a contract saying you get paid before the holiday you would be screaming at your payroll dept. saying where is my check? Maybe you are ignorant as to what a contract is. Not all people wait in front of home depot to get picked up by their employer. Anyone who lumps all teachers into a group of lazy drug addicts in sorely ignorant to life. "

" It's really quite entertaining to read such bile and bitterness regarding an internal disagreement and decision that doesn't affect your average Joe Knucklehead whatsoever. "

" And let me define "neglect"...many parents don't know or care where their kids are or who they are with; they drink and/or do drugs around their kids; they subject kids to emotional, mental, physical or sexual abuse; they don't spend time nurturing or teaching their kids but just stick them in front of the TV or video games; they allow their kids to come to school hungry, dirty, tired and anxious; they swear, fight and show violence in front of kids...I could go on, but you get my point. Teachers have to address all of those hurting kids' issues in order to teach them, which is no easy task. Perhaps people ought to learn how to be effective, loving parents and put their kids' needs first...we would be in much better shape as a society if that occurred. "

" The vast majority of Auburn teachers are fine, intelligent, hardworking folks who get a lot of crap from those who have no idea what teaching entails. Not only are teachers today tasked with educating our kids, but in many cases, they are also acting as caring parents for kids whose real parents neglect them. Perhaps folks like Mr. Bizarro ought to walk in a person's shoes before slamming them in such a nasty fashion...what kind of values is he teaching HIS kids? "

" I disagree with localman. I feel that almost all of the teachers in Auburn do a great job. The problem is that this union leader is only looking out for herself, not the kids or the teachers and education. If the Auburn teachers want to improve their image, they should elect a new leader. The petty whine of the current union hurts the teachers image. This issue should have been part of the school (state) policy to avoid conflicts. "

" BACKBONE, HAVE YOU MET THIS NINNY? WHAT ANOTHER BROKEN SYSTEM. RAPED BY THE UNIONS AND WHO PAYS THE BILL?

ANY PERSON IN A PRIVATE CORPORATION GOES TO PAYROLL AND ASKS THEM TO PAY-UP AHEAD OF SCHEDULE AND WHAT DO YOU THINK THEY MIGHT SAY????? ONE DAY VERY SOON, THIS WORK-FARE (WELFARE FOR LAZY, DRUNKEN, DOPE SMOKING COLLEGE GRADS) WE CALL TEACHERS WILL BE HELD ACCOUNTABLE, (AND PISS TESTED, TOO). LAME, LAME, LAME, LAME, LAME. REWARDED FOR BEING CAREER STUDENTS WITH NO DIRECTION. I SICERELY ASK YOU TO THINK. THINK BACK AND COME TO TERMS WITH WHICH OF YOUR PEERS BECAME TEACHERS. ENOUGH SAID??? I CANNOT IMAGINE WHY THE AMERICAN WAY OF LIFE IS ERODING SO CONSISTENTLY, RIGHT? WITH THE STEADY LIBERAL & LAZY INFLUENCE FROM THE AVERAGE LBERAL & LAZY TEACHER, WHAT DO YOU/WE EXPECT? "

" The rest of us living in the Real world, would have been told NO by our bosses/owners! And if we pressed the issue we would have been fired. Something smells here! Way to "cave-in" for the people and Auburn, Mr. Pabis. Do you even have a "backbone"??? "
