UNION SPRINGS #- Anthony O'Hara, 10, wants a Lego set for Christmas.
“I would play with them,” he said. “I would build a house.”
Freddy Brown, 8, wants a Nintendo DS.
“You can play games on it,” he explained.
O'Hara and Brown joined about 60 other children on Saturday evening for a visit from Santa at the Frontenac Museum in Union Springs. Top on many wish lists were Webkinz, Bionicles, PSP gaming consoles, Wiis and cell phones.
The annual event began with a tree lighting ceremony in front of St. Michael's Church.
To the cheer of the crowd, village board member Jim Vreeland lit the 15-foot Blue Spruce donated by Cranebrook Tree Service.
Then the children and parents walked to the museum, which hosted the party with Santa. The 15-piece community band, under the direction of Bruce Boardman, played holiday classics while anxious children awaited the arrival of Santa.
The event was a group effort by the museum, the village, the fire department, the Lions Club and the Seventh Day Adventist Church. The Ladies Auxiliary of the American Legion provided the refreshments and 150 gifts, of which 60 to 70 were given away, said Linda Zach, president of the Frontenac Historical Society.
“This is a real community effort,” she said. “It really works out well.”
The children would agree with that. Their excitement at meeting Santa was only matched by their anticipation of Christmas.
Franki Smith 12, enjoys getting presents, but her favorite part of the holiday is being with family.
“We have a Christmas Eve party,” she said. “It's fun.”
Emma Wade, 7, likes decorating the tree, which happened at her house last Sunday.
“You get to see all your favorite ornaments,” she said. She most likes the ornaments that feature pictures of her and her sister.
Blake Hahn, 7, looks forward to spending the holiday with his sister, Gracie, 1. Hahn is a good brother who has added Gracie to his wish list, his grandmother said.
“Every now and then he asks for something for his baby sister,” Jayne said.
Gracie wants dolls, Hahn said.
“She gots lots of baby dolls at our house,” he said. “She says she's their mom, and she tries to feed them Cheez Doodles.”
