Bean, Wolves bounce back from season-opening loss

Michael Bean led the Union Springs boys basketball team with 10 points and eight rebounds in a 45-44 win over Dryden on Friday.
Nate Markham, Jason Schenck, Ryan Fox and Mark Delaney each recorded six points. Schenck also added five assists off the bench.

“We won because we were much more aggressive,” Wolves coach Tim Darnell said. “We took it personal after the last loss, so we decided to come out and do our best.”

The defending Section IV, Class C champs (1-1) head to play Thomas A. Edison on Tuesday.

Moravia 64, Trumansburg 43

Pat Mott racked up 16 points, nine assists and seven rebounds in the Blue Devils' balanced win. TJ Powers came away with 12 points and nine rebounds, while Greg Pasho sank 11 points.

Moravia (2-0) hosts Lansing Tuesday.

Skaneateles 59, Solvay 45

Thomas Schoener tallied 12 points to lead the Lakers, while Nick Pesarchick came away with 11 points.

Skaneateles (1-1) travel to Cazenovia Wednesday.

Bishop Grimes 83, Jordan-Elbridge 51

Tom Graf led the Eagles with 14 points, while Teddy Hart contributed 13.

Jordan-Elbridge (0-2) heads to Pulaski Monday.

Candor 86, Southern Cayuga 68

Bryan VanNostrand led the Chiefs with 15 points, Anthony Espinosa added 11 and Sean Driscoll tallied 10 points.

Southern Cayuga (1-1) travels to Odessa-Montour Tuesday.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Trumansburg 51, Moravia 49

The Blue Devils held a 31-22 lead at the half, but fell late. Hannah Mackey contributed 16 points and three steals, while Claire Hunsinger came down with seven points, eight rebounds, two steals, three assists and a block.

Moravia (1-2) travels to Lansing Tuesday.

BOYS HOCKEY

Auburn 5, Canton 1

Andrew Chadderdon led the Maroons with two goals and one assist in the Potsdam Tournament Friday.

Also leading Auburn were Bobby Gage who contributed one goal and two assists, Reggie Townsend and Jeremy Marginsky both added one goal, Connor Entenmann posted two assists and Mike McLaughlin recorded an assist.

The goal for Marginsky was his first career at the varsity level.

Steve Komanecky had 18 saves.

Auburn (2-3) plays in the finals against Potsdam today.

VOLLEYBALL

Skaneateles 3, Jamesville-Dewitt 0

Chloe Warner led the Lakers with 17 assists in the team's 23-13, 25-2, 25-14 win. Emily Wood came away with nine kills, while Ryan Merle and Katherine Hill each recorded four kills. Alexa Campanile tallied six aces.

Skaneateles (2-0) heads to Cazenovia Tuesday.

Bishop Grimes 3, Port Byron 1

Kara Pitcher scored four aces, nine kills, eight digs and one assist for the Panthers in their 25-23, 18-25, 25-23, 25-21 loss on Thursday. Brooke Hamm tallied nine aces, one kill and six digs, Britt Timms recorded one ace and three digs, Julie Sroka came down with two kills and Maggie O'Brien had one dig.

Kelsey Pitcher scored three digs, while Kelsie Bennett racked up five aces, one kill, one dig and 12 assists.

Port Byron (1-2) travels to LaFayette today.

SWIMMING

Auburn 98, Nottingham 68

The Maroons kicked off their season well, beginning with Pat Stephens, Vlad Loenko, Justin Sawran and Brian Roe coming in first in the 200 medley relay (2:04.24) on Thursday.

Standout senior Pat O'Donovan came in first in the 200 freestyle (1:48.30), John Tehan won the 200 IM (2:23.36) and 500 freestyle (5:33.01), while Adam Zelehowsky won the 50 freestyle (24.07) and the 100 freestyle (53.32).

Sawran took the 100 butterfly (1:01.56), Patrick Stephens won the 100 backstroke (1:10.81) and Sean Doyle came in first in the 100 breaststroke (1:16.21).

Doyle, Loenko, Ian Molloy and Gary Leader took first in the 200 freestyle relay (1:55.74) and Matt Warner, Ben Scheibel, Clay Murray and Greg Rifanburg won the 400 freestyle relay (4:29.83).

Auburn (1-0) hosts Rome Free Academy Wednesday.
