MISS: To a lack of participation by city and county elected officials at Wednesday's public hearing on a proposal to create a National Historic Park in Auburn.
The Harriet Tubman Home has tremendous historic significance and has been woefully underutilized over the years.
Masking the home and associated sites as a national park would mean not only millions in initial federal investment but could turn Auburn into a much more appealing place for tourism, and that would benefit the entire area.
The National Park designation, while seemingly moving in the right direction, is not a done deal, and our local officials should be doing all they can to show their support for this project.
HIT: To Success by 6's reading challenge to local parents. The group is asking parents to read 100 books to a child under the age of 5 over a three-month period.
Studies show that children who are read to before the age of 5 traditionally learn how to read at an earlier age. This challenge is a great opportunity to establish that habit.
MISS: To another round of layoffs at Goulds Pumps in Auburn.
The weakening global economy is affecting this company in much the same way others are suffering - but that's no consolation to the workers who are being let go.
At this point, we can only hope that if and when the economy turns around that these workers can be recalled.
HIT: To the homes in the area that are decorated for the holidays. Driving around at night, you're treated to a display of lights and decorations that turn yards into works of art.
Some people spend a lot of time and money to turn their residences into holiday showcases while others go for a simpler approach.
No matter, big or small, it's something nice to see this time of year.
