AUBURN - An Auburn teenager who admitted to burglarizing local barns, shacks and houses last January was sentenced to probation in Cayuga County Court Thursday.
The 17-year-old was granted youthful offender status and received five years probation, 100 hours of community service and was ordered to pay $1,090 in restitution to his victims, all stemming from three counts of felony third-degree burglary to which he had pleaded guilty on Oct. 3.

Up until these charges, the boy did not have a criminal record.

When he pleaded guilty, he admitted to acting as a lookout while two other teens stole generators, gas cans, electronic equipment and various other items last January.

While District Attorney Jon Budelmann suggested that the boy should receive some jail time to get "a taste" of what jail would be like, defense attorney Carl DePalma said he had be going through a bad period in his life when he committed the burglaries, that he had been led astray, and has learned his lesson.

"He realizes these things were completely wrong," DePalma said. "He never should have done those things, and he'll never do it again."

The boy apologized to the court for his actions.

" well first off i personally know this young man. he had indeed been going through a rough time at the point he did this. he is remourseful and has sworn he will never do it again. when he found out that the district attorney was recommending jail, he broke out in tears and starting tossing around apologies. " He didn't have a criminal record until now! What a classic quote. "

" childofthekorn1318, did you spend time in jail? Sounds like it. How about if this happened to you? Punishment for these crimes is way to soft in this country. He should atleast have some hardcore community service to do. "

" Jail is not the place for this kid. You talk about sending a messege to our youth, what about the messege it would send. "You are an animal, and deserved to be caged as such". That is no good right there, stop thriving on punishment and revenge. "

" Garbage. This "kid" is not a Saint or misunderstood. He needs to go to jail. The person he fenced his stolen goods with needs to go to jail as well.

funny thing, he did not realize these things "were completely wrong" until he was caught. Give me a break.

If he didn't get caught, he would still be stealing.

Great message to youth. "
