AUBURN - An Auburn teenager who admitted to burglarizing local barns, shacks and houses last January was sentenced to probation in Cayuga County Court Thursday.
The 17-year-old was granted youthful offender status and received five years probation, 100 hours of community service and was ordered to pay $1,090 in restitution to his victims, all stemming from three counts of felony third-degree burglary to which he had pleaded guilty on Oct. 3.

Up until these charges, the boy did not have a criminal record.

When he pleaded guilty, he admitted to acting as a lookout while two other teens stole generators, gas cans, electronic equipment and various other items last January.

While District Attorney Jon Budelmann suggested that the boy should receive some jail time to get "a taste" of what jail would be like, defense attorney Carl DePalma said he had be going through a bad period in his life when he committed the burglaries, that he had been led astray, and has learned his lesson.

"He realizes these things were completely wrong," DePalma said. "He never should have done those things, and he'll never do it again."

The boy apologized to the court for his actions.
