Holiday rock

A cabaret of nostalgic Christmas carols and original holiday-inspired music will help residents get into a festive mood as they prepare for the holiday season.
Bob Piorun, a local musician who will perform at the holiday show at the Auburn Public Theater, said the event will feature songs from his new CD, “It's Christmas,” in addition to traditional music from carols and movies.

Piorun said he got the idea for the show from fellow musician Connie Patti, who is also featured on his CD.

“I play music for a living, and January, February and March are the slowest times of the year,” Piorun said. “So I started putting together themed dinner cabarets like the ‘Best of Broadway' and movies. Connie likes Rosemary Clooney, who was in 'White Christmas,' and she said we should put a show on with that theme.”

Piorun said he decided to write his own Christmas songs after he made a CD of carols last year. Piorun said the first CD was made so he could learn how to use some new recording equipment he had received and the second one was a chance for him to produce his own lyrics and music instead of relying on the classics. A lot of the music on the CD, Piorun said, came from his own real-life experiences.

“‘Emily's Song' is a song I made for one of my 5-year-old students named Emily,” Piorun said. “It addresses the idea of a girl asking her mother if Santa Claus is real, but it's deeper than just that ... The mother answers her and says if you believe in him, he's real. That's a pretty profound answer to a lot of questions in life, and that's the whole basis of religion.”

For those that come out to enjoy the music, Piorun promised an entertaining evening full of laughs and good music.

“It will be free-spirited and easy listening with some fun skits and props thrown in,” Piorun said. “There will be some scenes, dialogue and jokes. There are a few adult-themed allusions that we will have to be careful of. It will be family oriented, but young children may not enjoy it as much.”
