Grinnell led the Auburn girls basketball team with 25 points in a 51-26 win over Henninger. With the performance, the senior is nearly 50 points away from 1,000 for her career. She would be only the third player in Maroons' history to achieve the feat, and the first since Leigh Aziz.
“Kelly was our whole offense,” Auburn head coach Gary Grinnell said.
But the team's defense was the difference.
While the game remained close for a half, the Maroons locked down and held Henninger to four second-half points.
“Any time you hold a AA team to such a low number of points, it speaks wonders of your defense,” Gary Grinnell said.
Taylor Baran chipped in with six points for Auburn (1-1).
While the defense won the game, the Maroons' offensive woes continued.
“The effort is there,” Gary Grinnell said. “So it's not a matter of the work. We just need to hit the shots. Some of it might be confidence so it might take a few days to get the right mindset, but this is a special group. I'm quite positive about this year.”
Auburn's JV team defeated Henninger 48-29.
