An Auburn organization this winter is challenging adults to get young children ensconced in the literary world of reading.
The Auburn chapter of Success by 6 is assembling an early childhood reading challenge as a way to involve adults in the development of young children and raise awareness for the Dolly Parton Imagination Library.
Success by 6, a United Way national initiative administered locally by the E. John Gavras Center, promotes community collaboration to support and encourage early childhood development action plans in areas of a child's life, including literacy. It is now asking adults to read 100 books to a child under 5 years old over a three-month period.
The kick-off for this reading challenge is expected to be February Family Fun Day, an annual activity day for young children this year hosted from 1 to 4 p.m. Feb. 1, 2009 at Cayuga Community College.
“We're trying to get adults into the habit of reading to children early and often because it can have such a significant impact on their relationship with the child they care for, or if they are a parent or grandparent, and that relationship helps to build a better foundation and helps them get ready for the challenges they have ahead,” said Nancy Tehan, the Auburn director for Success by 6.
Adults will be asked to note the books read to the child on log-in sheets provided by Success by 6 at the February Fun Day, she said. Completed sheets can be sent back to the E. John Gavras Center, and for every 100 books read, names will be entered into a raffle for a handful of prizes.
This promotion is also designed to spotlight the Dolly Parton Imagination Library, which provides a book each month to every registered pre-school age child in a community. The books are free to the families of children; the program is funded through community donations. This is the second year Cayuga County has participated.
“It's important for adults to know that through the Dolly Parton Imagination Library, books are available, so let's get using them,” Tehan said. “That's what they are there for.”
As part of this campaign, Success by 6 will encourage local businesses to sponsor one child for the library at a cost of $27. For every child sponsored, Tehan said, the organization will provide the business with a red heart that can be displayed in the business' window to signify the contribution to early education.
