TONAWANDA -- A 3-month-old boy remains hospitalized after being attacked by one of the family's pit bull inside the family's Buffalo-area home.
Police in the city of Tonawanda say the child was attacked Sunday afternoon when his mother left the room for a brief time.

Officials say the dog broke through a plastic barrier and bit the child on his chest and stomach.

The baby underwent emergency surgery at Women and Children's Hospital in Buffalo. Officials aren't disclosing the baby's name or condition.

Officials removed the dog from the home. A second pit bull that wasn't involved in the attack was also taken from the home. Police say the dogs are being kept at the local SPCA.

" In regards to the comments about how many "other" breeds attack children/ owners. There are yrly stats that you can look up n find, and for a while now Pit Bulls do top the list. Surprisingly our old faithful Golden Retrievers and Labradors are among the top as well, but at a much lower stat that the Pit Bull which still shows drastic measures need to be taken by the government to require mandatory spay/neutering ( as other countrys have already done ),with a select few bred only by top breeders in the country who know how to breed bad traits out of a dog thru highly selective breeding. And of course people buying these or any dogs for $150.00 aren't going to get a selectively bred, healthy dog. You get what you pay for !!. "

" the problem is, is that this dog is utilized and idolized by thugs everywhere. either get rid of the dogs, or get rid of their owners. i don't care which, just pick one. "

" Ok..pit-bull,beagle,coonhound..etc. No matter what the dog was, it mauled a 3 month old BABY. I know the pit breed is loved by some, and yes, MAYBE there are a few (very few) good pits out there, but the fact of the matter is, pits should NOT EVER be trusted with a baby! Pits are like bears..one sound..one smell..one jolt, can set it off, no matter how lovingly tempered it may be..it happens, and it's in the Pits nature / breed. Im not knocking the dog or the breed..just the ignorance and the trust of the owners. Yes, ANY dog, could do this...but it just so happens, that it's more frequent in pits. When is this going to stop happening to innocent babies, and small children ? What did this 3 month old DO, to deserve this....nothing! "

" the press is always quick to blame a pit.how many dog attacks dont make the news because it was the families mutt.i own two pit bulls and it is all about how they are raised.i trust my pits a lot further than a lot of dogs i have encountered.yes some are vicious but i have seen vicious beagles too.i have been bitten buy a champion coon hound but never a pit bull.a dog is a dog! " As a person who has owned, bred, shown and trained dogs for over 20 yrs, including breeds such as Siberian Huskies,Pomeranians and Dobermans thru the yrs, I have to think that this breed has clearly been allowed to run a muke, and should all be spayed/neutered but a very select few, which will be bred to a very stable,non-aggressive new standart and only top breeders in the country. In the 80's similar steps were taken with the Doberman, which was great as it lowered the amount of puppy mill breeders breeding and improved the breed, we are way beyond time for action on this breed !!!. " I agree, the dog should be put down and if it was my child the dog would have been dead within seconds of my laying hands on it.

But my statement is relevant because there is an increasing vilification of pit bulls, which are no more ill-tempered than many other breeds (including labs). This vilification is fueling increasing public calls for breed-specific legislation which damages the lives of the owners of these beautiful dogs. I try to combat that ignorance where I can. "

" What? "the press will default to calling it a pit bull"??? Who cares what breed of dog it is. It attacked a child!!!!! Enough said. Put the dog down. And people wonder why I'm so skeptical of any dog around my child. "

" As with every "pit bull" story, please remember that when the breed of the dog is unknown, the press will default to calling it a "pit bull". "
