AUBURN - For a team that showed flashes of greatness, the Auburn ice hockey team's loss to Albany CBA must have been a frustrating one Friday night.

The Maroons skated their way to a 3-1 lead in the second period, but the Brothers were able to find the right spots at the right moments in the 5-4 victory.
“We were like Jekyll and Hyde tonight,” said Maroons' coach Mike Lowe. “We played great at times and other times it was just a whole different team. We've had some great periods so far this year; tonight we just didn't put enough of them together.”
Auburn led CBA in shots, 25-23, but mistakes, penalties and breakaways doomed the Maroons after they'd gained momentum.
“We made a lot of mistakes,” Lowe said. “Too many odd-man rushes. We talk all the time about not giving up the odd-man rushes. We did that way too much tonight. It's hard to win games when we make mistakes.
“We just need to play consistently better. We've shown that we have potential - that we can be a very good team. We will be a very good team; it's just a matter of taking care of mistakes. It's early in the season so I anticipate in the next couple of weeks we'll just keep getting better and those mistakes better not happen anymore.”
In the first period, neither team was able to gain an edge until JT Foltz was called for hooking five minutes in.
The result was a CBA power-play goal, as Casey Hladlik found TJ Lane, slipping the puck past the right side of goalie Steve Komanecky (18 saves) for the game's first score.
Auburn continued to have problems in the first, and was faced with 5-on-3 match-ups twice before the end of the period. However, the backline was able to hold a fast Brothers squad out of the net.
The Maroons played their best hockey in the second period, scoring three goals against new goalie Zach Baron.
The Maroons scored their first goal at the 2:40 mark, when Brandyn Morgan fed Reggie Townsend for the tying goal.
Auburn began to find a rhythm on offense, pelting Baron with five shots at the midway point.
Five minutes after the first goal, Bobby Gage's (Mike McLaughlin assist) shot ricocheted off the far post and past Baron.
Townsend netted his second goal a minute later on assists from Morgan and Matt Festa.
“The second period we looked great,” Lowe said. “We had some momentum, some flow, and then we just turned off the valve for some reason.”
The Maroons' two-goal lead lasted as many minutes.
