Cayuga-run stores reopen, minus cigarette inventories

A day after being raided by the Cayuga and Seneca county sheriffs' offices, both Lake Side Trading stores were open for business Wednesday, minus their cigarette inventory.
The stores was raided Tuesday after the sheriffs' office obtained a search warrant to seize any untaxed cigarettes and other evidence that could be used to charge the Cayuga Nation with felony tax evasion.

Cayuga County District Attorney Jon Budelmann said deputies seized more than 1.5 million untaxed cigarettes from the Union Springs store. Possessing more than 10,000 untaxed cigarettes qualifies as a felony.

The tribe, which owns the Lake Side Trading in Seneca Falls and Union Springs, had previously said they do not have to charge taxes on transactions that take place on their property.

But Budelmann said the store property is not on sovereign land and must follow all of the state's tax laws.

A store employee said the business re-opened at 9 p.m. Tuesday and that cars are allowed to purchase gas, but added that customers will be unable to purchase cigarettes at this time because they were all seized during the raid.

" It would be interesting to know the amount of tax dollars that will be used to prosecute. I would also like to know a little more about why local government has decided to go forward with this while our state government is staying out of it. "

Meanwhile there are drunk people driving the streets killing our innocent children and your worried about cig. taxes. come on thats a waste of taxpayers money!! I believe there are more important things these "Certain people" could be attending too!?????????? "

" Hopefully, if they restock, they will have them confiscated again.
Kudos to the local officials involved (the Sheriffs and DAs) for apparently being the only people in government to actually enforce the law equally and fairly. "

" I heard some lady talking in Wegmans today, she knows some of the employees of Lakeside Trading, and the employee said that they plan to restock thier cigarette inventory and continue business as usual. Who knows what the truth is, but I wouldnt be suprised that they do just that! "
