Gas tax would help transportation system

Saturday, November 22, 2008 11:41 PM EST

Jim Hightower, one of my favorite muckrakers and publisher of the Hightower Lowdown, has this advice for us wannabe social reformers. “If you want to go upstream, you have to swim against the current. Even a dead fish can go with the flow.”
Taking a page from the Hightower book, I have prepared this online petition. Anyone wishing to sign this petition may go to the following Web site: www.ipetitions.com/petition/taxforpublictransportarion.

Petition: Recognizing the need to curb greenhouse gas emissions, and seeking viable alternatives to rising gasoline prices, we, the undersigned, would support a one cent increase in the gasoline tax to be earmarked for upgrading public transportation systems throughout the state.

" If Obama comes up with 2.5 million jobs, he's going to loose support from a lot of the people who don't pay taxes and are going to get a rebate check. "

" We'd be paying and not getting anything back for our cost -- there are no buses or any other form of public transportation in Southern Cayuga County, and a penny extra tax on gas won't change that. "
