The New York State Police announced this week that troopers will increase enforcement of drunk-driving laws during the holiday season.
According to the state police, the crackdown will last from Nov. 21 to Jan. 1 and take place in all 62 of the state's counties. Law enforcement agencies will establish sobriety checkpoints and increase patrols to improve road safety.

Driving with a blood alcohol content of .08 percent or higher will result in an arrest, and driving with a level of .05 constitutes driving while ability impaired.

The last of such crackdowns occurred near Labor Day weekend, when 2,751 motorists were arrested over an 18-day period. During the same stretch of time, 78,219 other citations were issued.

“The Holidays are a time of celebration and memorable moments with family and friends and should not be overshadowed by a needless tragedy because of someone choosing to drink and drive,” Department of Motor Vehicles David Swarts said in a release.

In 2007, 28 percent of the driving fatalities in New York were alcohol-related.
