Port Byron native Ray Miles led the SUNY Cortland football team to a 31-14 win over Plymouth State in the first round of the NCAA Division III Football Championship Saturday.
Miles was 13-for-23 on the day for 175 passing yards and three touchdowns during the Red Dragons' first tournament win since 1988. He also set a school record of 2,493 passing yards on the year.
Andrew Giuliano rushed for 113 yards and a score, while adding onto the single season rushing record with 1,436. Eric Hajnos, Mike Lane and Zacc Guaragno each caught a touchdown pass from Miles.
Matt Berman led the defense with 11 tackles, an interception and a fumble recovery. Richard Rolo forced a fumble, while also having 10 tackles. Brian Haas and Lou Crispo each had 10 tackles. Cortland (10-1) hosts No. 7 seeded Curry next week
In Ithaca, the second-seeded Ithaca Bombers were upset 26-21 by Curry University.
With just 32 seconds left in regulation, the Colonels scored the winning touchdown. Ryan Van De Giesen led the Colonels with 268 passing yards and four touchdowns.
Ithaca ends the season at 9-2, while Curry (10-1) will travel to play SUNY Cortland.
At Hobart, the Hobart Statesmen gained 423 total yards offensively, while Rick Doyle led the day with 206 passing yards and two touchdowns to beat Lycoming College 33-15.
Doyle also added 10 yards rushing and a score. Zach Schulz had seven receptions for 76 yards and a score, while Andrew Marlier rushed 24 times for 96 yards and a score.
The defense was led by Lance Boyington with three interceptions, while Ryan Aruck and Justin Hager each had 9 tackles.
Hobart (9-1) advances to the second round of the playoffs for the fourth time since 2000 and will travel to Mount Union next weekend.
