Two Cents

After all the problems we've had in the last few months, we're finally finding out that these political people who run our towns, cities, the whole government, are not really worth what they're getting paid.

They are taking trucks traffic from routes 41, 41A and 38 but not Route 20 --- there are more trucks on this road than on all the others. They speed, tailgate and drive wild, so you take your life into your own hands every time you pull out of your driveway or road.

No wonder the county is broke and raising our taxes. They're paying health insurance and mileage to the county legislators, and they do a $25,000 feasibility study, but think of the good things they could do with that money and not raise our taxes.

I hear about some of these salaries of the superintendents of the highways getting $85,000 or $90,000 a year -- they're not worth that much money. Let's cut some of the salaries in the government. You guys aren't really worth it and you've proved it.

my opinion has nothing to do with favoring a party/a group/a person, it is totally based on FACTS.

in this mad world today--along with the gossip magazines/media/TV/internet--
all that is usually headlined is the BAD, well about the good, such as the scholarships/feeding the homeless/ or just simply aiding a neighbor who is in true need???

this so called FARCE of an indictment is nothing more than a headline to sell newspapers!!!

maybe you should stop TUNING out ALL the words instead of picking and choosing those that suit your whim of today!

I suppose you think QAL Capone was a good man too because he gave out turkeys on Thanksgiving to curry favor with the public after arranging the St Valentine's Day Massacre? It's not the organization--it's the criminal scumbags behind it. Your callow ignorance is stupefying.

" If the auto industry gets bailout money, they will probably continue business as usual. They even flew to Washington individually on private jets, best to show up in style. Bailout money to be paid back is based on the assumption they will recover. There SHOULD be strings attached, that sure makes it clear. Concessions SHOULD be made by the unions, they already stated that they have given enough and don't plan on doing more. Mitt Romney " IF General Motors, Ford and Chrysler get the bailout that their chief executives asked for yesterday, you can kiss the American automotive industry goodbye. It won’t go overnight, but its demise will be virtually guaranteed.

Without that bailout, Detroit will need to drastically restructure itself. With it, the automakers will stay the course — the suicidal course of declining market shares, insurmountable labor and retiree burdens, technology atrophy, product inferiority and never-ending job losses. Detroit needs a turnaround, not a check." The auto industry needs a cure, not a bandaid. Generally speaking, Obama will deal in "shoulds." "

Concessions should be made by the unions and suppliers to help the profit margin. The industry has to make quality, efficent and competetive cars. If Bush doesn't do anything he will when he takes over. "

again 'investment' in the Vanguard Group, which manages approximately $1.3 trillion in assets: 401K, college funds, mutual funds, etc.

fact: that a Willacy County, Texas, grand jury lacks authority over federal actions,
the indictment of Cheney, former Attorney General Alberto Gonzales and other is NOT EVEN SIGNED by a judge,

It's almost not even worth noting that Cheney's alleged tie -- investing his millions in Vanguard mutual funds that are major owners of publicly traded federal prison contractors -- is weak beyond belief;
by the grand jury's reasoning, one could surmise that others with Vanguard 401K plans (example: journalists at the Philadelphia Daily News and Inquirer!) could be charged as well.

Be sure to thank Cheney for investing his millions:
The Vanguard Scholarship Program provides merit-based scholarships of up to $10,000 to minority students entering their senior year of college during the 2007-2008 school year. "

" By the way, Chris, nice how you cherry-picked your way through that Faux News article--here's part of what you left out--CM! PAY ATTENTION!!!

"Cheney is charged with engaging in an organized criminal activity related to the vice president's investment in the Vanguard Group, which holds financial interests in the private prison companies running the federal detention centers. It accuses Cheney of a conflict of interest and "at least misdemeanor assaults" on detainees because of his link to the prison companies.
Megan Mitchell, a spokeswoman for Cheney, declined to comment on Tuesday, saying that the vice president had not yet received a copy of the indictment.

The indictment accuses Gonzales of using his position while in office to stop an investigation in 2006 into abuses at one of the privately-run prisons.

That this is happening in the most corrupt "legal system" in the country--in Texas--is no surprise. It will also be no surprise if the corrupt system in lace there lets "two of their own" go scott-free. But it is encouraging to know that at least the courts are wiling to confront the arch-criminal Cheney and attempt to at least punish him for one of his long roster of crimes! "

" HEY!
DID YOU GUYS ALL SEE THIS?!?!?

Ooooh, I'm sure Cheney and Gonzalez are packing their bags for prison right now Karl!

A few things our local legal expert Karl forgot to mention:

Willacy County District Attorney Juan Angel Guerra himself had been under indictment for more than a year and half before a judge dismissed the indictments last month. This flurry of charges came in the twilight of Guerra's tenure, which ends this year after nearly two decades in office. He lost convincingly in a Democratic primary in March.

A second batch of indictments targeted public officials connected to Guerra's own legal battles.

Willacy County Clerk Gilbert Lozano, District judges Janet Leal and Migdalia Lopez, and special prosecutors Mervyn Mosbacker Jr. — a former U.S. attorney — and Gustavo Garza — a long-time political opponent of Guerra — were all indicted on charges of official abuse of official capacity and official oppression.

Garza, the only one who could be immediately reached Tuesday, called it a sad state of affairs.

"I feel sorry for all of the good people this unprofessional prosecutor has maligned," Garza said. "I'm not at all concerned about the accusations he has trumped up."

After Guerra's office was raided as part of the investigation early last year, he camped outside the courthouse in a borrowed camper with a horse, three goats and a rooster. He threatened to dismiss hundreds of cases because he believed local law enforcement had aided the investigation against him.

I almost forgot, a ham sandwich was also named as a co-conspirator.

Good luck with this one Karl! Hahaha... "

As far as "placing blame"--well, if you don't find out WHO is responsible, than "those who do not learn from the past are doomed to repeat it"--wouldn't you agree?!

Also, "the people" obviously DIDN'T KNOW that they were voting for a liar and a deceitful scumbag when they voted in Bush (well, the Liberals did, but they didn't vote for him anyway! LOL!)--he bamboozled y'all with that "compassionate Conservative" and "A uniter, not a divider" crap--and the proof that the country now sees that is the resounding rejection of Republicanism which has been so representative of the complete betrayal of the Middle Class and its interests for the last eight years. Which shouldnt take weeks, months, or years!!! "

" A great idea, David--I completely concur!

I am torn about this auto bailout thing. On the one hand, I think these idiots and fools who made Hummers, Hemi-powered massive pickups and Escalades SHOULD be allowed to go bankrupt--I've railed against these stupid gas-guzzlers enough to be hypocritical if I DIDN'T say they should have seen this coming.
On the other hand--could the economy face the prospect of thousands---maybe hundreds of thousands of jobs lost?

If bankruptcy only means that they still keep working, retooling, and just paying back their creditors when they become profitable, then I'm all for it!

However, I do DIS-agree with you about the government having little to do with it, in the fact that the regulatory industries that should ave been in place to catch such abuses as you listed were NOT there. This administration had really gone out of their way to "stack the deck" in favor of the Auto business, to do away with regulations from everything from relaxing pollution controls, to lowering miles-per-gallon standards, and not allowing oversight of financial and quality issues.
The way I see it is, when the kids go crazy and wind up in the pokey overnight for vandalism or something--who do you REALLY blame--the dumb kids--or the parents who SHOULD HAVE BEEN overseeing and parenting better? Seems to me to be basic 'Regulatin' 101"? "

" Karl--I rarely take anything personaly, but I appreciate your explaination. Many people think that I am against the bailout because I am not in a financial mess. I am against the bailout because of one simple rule I use with my own family, and anyone who comes into my bank with an issue. Are we healing the wound, or just placing a bandaid on to cover up the problem? Its like taking a young person with massive credit card debt, and consolidating the debt into a loan, while leaving the credit cards open. They now have some breathing room, and think, what the heck, I won't run the credit cards up too much.....you know the rest--they are in the same bind over and over. I am not so much worried about this generation, but the next. What do my sons think? They have never wanted for anything in this life, but know the importance of working hard, and investing a little for the rainy day that inevitably comes. Now the government is teaching them that if hard times come, there is no need to feel any pain---they'll be bailed out because they are now being taught that it isn't their fault. The democrats want to blame the republicans and vice versa. The simple fact of the matter is that we had an industry that went into a frenzy, and the government had little to do with it---dishonest appraisals, overstated income on applications, and people with no self control caused this. I say that the regulators look at the brokers that lied on the applications, and the appraisers that overstated the property values, criminally prosecute them, and seize THEIR assets instead of my tax dollars. " I've probably mentioned before that a neighbor of one of my best friends back home in Detroit designed auto engines for one of the big 3 (can't recall which now -- it's been quite a few years). He admitted that they deliberately designed engines that would not be serviceable by your own mechanic, so they could force you to come in to a dealer and pay double for basic maintenance.

My mom had an American made car once where you couldn't change the oil without removing the air conditioning -- necessitating a huge bill and service from the dealer. She just never had it changed because she couldn't afford it.

It's that kind of attitude towards production which has driven the American auto industry into the mess it is in. Yes, the companies deserve to go into bankruptcy -- I just hate to think what that does to the entire State of Michigan, which is so dependent on that industry -- not just those who work in it directly, but the economy of the whole state, with plenty of repercussions to go around for the rest of the country.

You can't tank an ENTIRE INDUSTRY without it being felt by everyone in the country.

So, bottom line, I have mixed feelings on the subject. They certainly need reining in, and they need clamping down, revamping, downsizing of salaries and reduction of the top-heavy top, and they need to be FORCED to produce higher quality, fuel efficient, environment friendly vehicles because they just will not do it on their own. Can that be done with purse strings, or do they have to be washed down the tubes, taking many families lives with them, to get it right? "

This is caused by many things but the main two problems is:

1. Bad vehicle and production design. For instance, I read an article that stated that GM for example had 18 side view mirrors that were in production. The average for the Japanese automakers was 2. They used the same mirrors on many more vehicles. That's just one example but there were many more to cite.

2. Labor cost and job protection are horribly excessive. Unions run GM not GM. Unions had a place once upon a time. With laws and regulations as they are unions are too powerful. As a result they have become obsolete and detrimental to the American worker in the long run. "

The removal of our troops will be responsible and phased, directed by military commanders on the ground and done in consultation with the Iraqi government. Military experts believe we can safely redeploy combat brigades from Iraq at a pace of 1 to 2 brigades a month -- which would remove all of them in 16 months. That would be the summer of 2010 -- more than 7 years after the war began." Let's see if he can attain this. "

The foreign manufacturers pay $28 or $38/hr. The big 3 have to cut the gas guzzlers, cut some models, and produce more efficient vehicles. They should have done this 10 years ago. If they are given bailout money, they will never reorganize and this will happen again SOON. Retirements and health benefits for current retirees need to stay in place, they probably depend on it. "

Auto industry bail out: Like the banking bail-out, that money has to come with powerful strings attached as to what it can --and cannot-- be used for. It has to come with restrictions and directives which must be met or the penalties will come down like a hammer on the heads of the executives who don't make it happen. That means more execs who forego bonuses and maybe even take paycuts to keep their jobs. It means directives to produce higher-quality vehicles that are more fuel efficient and produce less pollution, and are made to last -- all at an affordable price. Other countries do it, and we SHOULD be able to do it too -- if we pay reasonable instead of inflated wages to auto workers, particularly up the line to middle management and executives. When you start taking hand-outs out of the pockets of the American people after you have scr*wed up so badly you are about to tank the whole economy, you better realize you have to trade-off a lot of say in what you can do with the money.

Those aren't YOUR profits you are spending unwisely -- that's MY money, and yours and yours, out of our pockets. "

While Nancy Pelosi pushes for the Bailout of the Big 3, I ask myself what side of her BED OF NAILS she got up on. Let me explain. If the Big 3 gets bailed out business will continue same as usual until they need more (and they will need more).

While bankruptcy doesn't mean loss of jobs, it simply lets companies undergo restructuring, trimming fat (overpaid CEO'S, EXCESSIVE BONUSES and the death grip of the UAW) . This is why the laws of bankruptcy were put in place (to save the jobs). By going through this process, the Big 3 would be able to put their products out on the market cheaper giving Americans the opportunity to buy AMERICAN MADE AUTOS at competitive pricing. Isn't that the goal?

Back to Nancy Pelosi. In Jan 2007 when the minimum wage went from 5.15 to 7.25, Pelosi had American Samoa exempted from the increase so Del Monte would not have to pay the higher wage. This would make Del Monte products less expensive than their competitor's. Pelosi's district is San Francisco----StarKist (owned by Del Monte Foods) headquartered in San Francisco-----StarKist is the major employer in American Somoa employing 75% of the Samoa workforce. Paul Pelosi, Nancy's husband owns $17,000,000 in StarKist stock. So on one side she wants to shell out Billions of dollars to protect the policies of the UAW and BAD MANAGEMENT of the BIG 3, but on the other side she suppresses wages of workers making minimum wage for her personal gains. I guess Pelosi's outlook is keep the minimum wage tuna packer with nothing and the UAW and CEO'S of the Big 3 out pricing their own products and employees giving foreign completion more advantages daily. She is the PERFECT reason why politicians are viewed as WH@RES. If the people of her district re-elect her another term then I feel that whole district should undergo treatment." "

At a time when New York State is more overwhelmingly Democratic than ever, this area elected Republicans. Good going, and lots of thanks to the head of the local Democratic Party who gave no support until she gave nothing more than a gesture in the last week or two.

She wasn't doing her job then, and she is going to be in trouble for not doing her job in terms of making sure the financial reports get filed. It's not that hard -- you just read all the literature and make sure the candidate saves all the receipts, and you fill in the blanks in the software and e-mail it to the State. When there is little activity, it's even easier. There is just no excuse for a whole Party failing to send those reports - and when the person took that role, he (and their treasurer is a guy) put his name, reputation and responsibility on the line -- really blew it. Office of the Secretary of Defense
The Pentagon
Washington, D.C.

Dear Concerned Citizen:

Thank you for your recent letter roundly criticizing our treatment of the Taliban and Al Qaeda detainees currently being held at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba.

Our administration takes these matters seriously, and your opinion was heard loud and clear here in Washington. You'll be pleased to learn that, thanks to the concerns of citizens like you, we are creating a new division of the Terrorist Retraining Program, to be called the "Liberals

Accept Responsibility for Killers" program, or LARK for short

In accordance with the guidelines of this new program, we have decided to place one terrorist under your personal care.

Your personal detainee has been selected and scheduled for transportation under heavily armed guard to your residence next Monday. Ali Mohammed Ahmed bin Mahmud (you can just call him Ahmed) is to be cared for pursuant to the standards you personally demanded in your

letter of admonishment.

It will likely be necessary for you to hire some assistant caretakers.

We will conduct weekly inspections, in conjunction with the Red Cross, to ensure that your care for Ahmed is commensurate with international standards and those you so strongly recommended in your letter.

Although Ahmed is sociopathic, extremely violent, and was trying to kill at least 20 women and children as we captured him, we hope that your sensitivity to what you described as his "attitudinal problem" will help him overcome these character flaws. I might add that he will bite you, or worse, given the chance.

However, perhaps you are correct in describing these problems as mere cultural differences.

We understand that you plan to offer counseling and home schooling. Your adopted terrorist is extremely proficient in hand-to-hand combat and can extinguish human life with such simple items as a pencil or nail clippers. We do not suggest that you ask him to demonstrate these skills

at your next yoga group. He is also expert at making a wide variety of explosive devices from common household products, so you may wish to keep those items locked up, unless (in your opinion) this might offend him.

Ahmed will not wish to interact with your wife or daughters since he views females as a subhuman form of property. This is a particularly sensitive subject for him, and he has been known to show violent tendencies around women who fail to comply with the new dress

code that Ahmed will recommend as more appropriate attire. I'm sure they will come to enjoy the anonymity offered by the bhurka - over time. Just remind them that it is all part of "respecting his culture and his religious beliefs" - wasn't that how you put it?

Thanks again for your letter. We truly appreciate it when folks like you, who know so much, keep us informed of the proper way to do our job.You take good care of Ahmed - and remember...we'll be watching

Good Luck!

Found on the Al Gore (tm) interwebs. "

" I sent this between 4-5 AM, before they updated the page, and I don't want it lost. Here it is again:

The fact that the 536 have their share of the blame does not absolve Bush of his own responsibility and blame.

In our system of checks-and-balances, in theory, each of the three branches is roughly equal. So, the Executive (i.e. the President) is roughly equal to the whole of the Legislative (i.e. Congress and the Senate). Add to that his veto power and he starts having the edge to manipulate what the Legislative can do. The Judicial branch is also supposed to be roughly equal, but add in the President's influence over who gets selected to be a Justice and once again, he gets the edge.

The President, all by himself, one single man, is a very powerful person -- not without some checks and balances -- but pretty powerful. Remember, Desert Storm happened by directive of the President, without bothering to get the required approval of the Congress, and hardly anyone even batted an eye at this flagrant misuse of Presidential power.

Don't forget too what this Bush did all by himself via Executive Order -- he gave himself dictatorial powers over the government AND private business should HE decide, all by himself, that it's a "national emergency," which he himself could determine and declare without a check or balance from anyone.

So the 536 ploy just doesn't fly. Yes, Congress has some blame in troubles as well, but the President is guilty as sin all by himself. " "
