Around the musical world in one night

The Morgan Opera House will hold a different kind of world tour when it hosts “It's a Small World ... of Song.”
Instead of physically flying from continent to continent to perform, the four singers on this tour will let the music do the traveling for them, said performer Denice Karamardian.

“We will span the globe through music starting in Asia and the Middle East, and then go to Europe, the Caribbean and South America,” Karamardian said. “We are very excited about it, the multicultural aspect will be amazing. People can compare the rich chords of South America to the feelings of Middle Eastern music.”

Karamardian, who will sing Brazilian, Cuban and Armenian songs, said she would also be joined on stage by Molly MacMillan, Nansa Brown and Marsha Eger, all of Ithaca. MacMillan, a pianist, will sing several French and American selections; Brown, a native of Mongolia, will sing several songs from her homeland and Russia, and Eger will share her talent through several Tibetan, Hopi, Sanskrit, Hebrew and Latin chants.

“The performers are all excellent, and we are all different, and that will speak to the evolution of melody which will be presented through the music,” Karamardian said. “We will also be sharing the different forms of love in the world through the music, whether it's paternal or love for one's country. The chanting, though, will move us through the show. That's the passport for our transportation throughout the night because it will navigate us from country to country across the world.”

Karamardian also said she expected the audience to be as diverse as the music, with people coming from all over Cayuga and Tompkins counties. The event will even have piano and voice students from classes that two of the performers taught.

While this will be Karamardian's third performance at the opera house, she said it will be a special night for her because the show is dedicated to the memory of her father, George Peter, of Aurora.

“He was very involved with the opera house and this community,” Karamardian said. “I will sing some of the songs that I sang at his bedside, like the Cuban lullaby. They're songs that I have sung all my life.”

Karamardian said that while she and her family were familiar with the music, the common themes make it understandable to everyone because the themes are common in all cultures.

“It's really satisfying to present music from all around the world that people can relate to,” Karamardian said. “People can see and hear the dissimilarities and universalities of the songs and the themes. It's unifying and satisfying, and it's a testament to the universality of music.”
