Rian Lindell missed a potential game-winning field goal with 38 seconds remaining as the Cleveland Browns held on to beat the staggering Buffalo Bills 29-27 on Monday night at Ralph Wilson Stadium in Buffalo.
Phil Dawson's 56-yard field goal with 1:39 remaining proved to be the game-winner.
With the loss, the reeling Bills (5-5) drop to last place in the AFC East.
Trent Edwards gave Buffalo a brief lead, 27-26, on a 1-yard quarterback sneak for a touchdown with 2:25 remaining but Brady Quinn, making his first road start of his career, led the Browns (4-6) down the field into field-goal territory.
Edwards struggled for much of the game, throwing three interceptions, but a strong running game behind Marshawn Lynch (119 yards rushing) helped the Bills stay in the game.
Lynch eclipsed the 100-yard mark for the first time this season, while backup Fred Jackson rushed for 60 yards. The Bills had more than 180 yards rushing in the game.
Cleveland's Jerome Harrison opened the fourth quarter with a 72-yard touchdown run but the Bills answered immediately with a 98-yard kickoff return by Leodis McKelvin to cut the lead to three, 23-20.
Trailing 13-10 at halftime, the Bills threatened to take the lead on their first possession of the third quarter.Edwards hit Steve Johnson for 21 yards to the Browns 32. But two plays later, Jackson fumbled while struggling for extra yardage and Ahtyba Rubin recovered for the Browns.
