Traffic should stop on South Street on Vets Day

Sunday, November 16, 2008 11:20 PM EST

I am a citizen of Auburn and I write this letter on behalf of any and all veterans and their families and all who might be concerned as I am.
On Veterans Day, here in Cayuga County, when the bell rings at 11 a.m., I think while the services at City Hall are being held, all of the traffic on South Street, Auburn, should stop and wait until it is over. People cannot hear what is being said “in honor of our veterans.”

It should be done for that hour every year as it's only right, after all. It's for our veterans that have served our country, so let's do them honor too.

I'd also like to say it meant a lot for the services that were held for the U.S. Marines on their birthday at City Hall. Thank you, Mayor Quill and all who helped.

I am a daughter of a deceased military father who served our country for some 34 years and I too am a “significant other” to a U.S. Marine, as well here in Cayuga County.

" Try renting a sound system so you can hear the speakers. It is easier and less expensive than blocking a major artery in the city. "

" FG , I'll be sure to pass you feelings onto other Veterans who served so could could type your feelings. "

" I disagree with blocking off the street, SHEESH!
Can you imagine the money that would cost the city?
Traffic cops?
Signage?
Disruption of traffic to businesses like Wegmans and the such?
The fact that the building is on the corner makes it impossible. "

" FG
My flow of life was disrupted for 4 years when I served my country during the Viet Nam War. There are 24 million Veterans in the US today. If an hour a year will disrupt your flow, too bad.
You could eliminate a couple of long posts and save an hour that day, avoid Auburn or perhaps show some respect for those who served and attend the services "

" I dunno, being stuck in traffic and unable to get across to the other side of town for an hour does not improve one's attitude towards veterans, it just makes people irritable. Surely there are ways to show respect that don't disrupt the flow of life in the whole town.

It's why I hate parades, no matter how good the cause. "

" I agree, a reasonable request to block off the street for an hour! "
