On Nov. 7, we were privileged to attend the Veterans Commemoration Programs at both Weedsport Elementary and Weedsport Central High School. Both programs were of a quality that is amazing to describe.
At the elementary school, the students, who ranged from kindergarten through fifth grade, sang with a sincere, patriotic manner that was truly inspiring. Their rendition of “Proud To Be An American,” brought tears to our eyes.
At the high school, after recognition of the veterans, the senior class presented a USO show featuring renditions of many performers of the past. Bob Hope, Rodney Dangerfield, The Angels, Bobby Darrin and Leslie Gore were only a few of the acts. The performances showcased the amazing talent present in this senior class of 2009. However, the most important thing was the sincere appreciation by the students for the veterans. These students exhibited a very keen interest in the history of the personal contributions of all United States veterans.
A delicious lunch was served by the cafeteria staff and then the senior class mingled with the many veterans and listened to stories of their experiences during their service.
We extend a sincere thank you to Ms. Theresa Leonardi, history teacher at Weedsport, for her leadership and direction of this event. She is truly an inspiration for the students. The Weedsport School District is fortunate to have teachers of her quality.
