AUBURN - Caitlyn Dillard was in the zone for the Cayuga Community College women's basketball team in their first round 85-54 win over Niagara County Community College in the CCC Women's Basketball Classic, Saturday.
Dillard handled the Trailblazers pretty well as she scored 33 points, while going 3-for-4 at the arch. She wasn't the only threat on the court either. Quattrini had 18 points, while Shakeema Green finished with 15 and Ryan Reeder scored 10.
The Spartans (5-0) will play a rematch against Fulton-Montgomery Community College for the championship at 6 p.m., today. In the first meeting, the Spartans won 67-57 in overtime.
“Tomorrow's game won't be an easy one,” Spartans coach Jim Alberici said. “Our kids are excited for it though.”
Cayuga also has played smart basketball with its shot choices and have been consistent in its shooting with a percentage of 50 in their win.
“When we do that we're a tough team to beat,” Alberici said.
Green led the Spartans in the assists with five, while Dillard and Reeder each had four.
“It goes back to team unity,” Alberici said. “They don't worry about individual accomplishments. They just want to win that Championship. They just look for that open person on the court and it's a lot of fun to watch.”
Quattrini came down with a team-high 12 rebounds, while Green contributed eight.
Dillard also showed off her defensive skills with four steals. Ryan Iannello had three points and Samantha Race finished with six.
With the short time gap against Fulton-Montgomery Community College and Niagara County Community College the Spartans will use their prior experience with the Raiders as their scouting report.
“We know we got our work cut out for us,” Alberici said. “It will be a tough game.”
Alberici has seen the players of his upcoming opponents and knows what to expect from their team. His uncertainty to other teams has left him unsure of just how the season will go, but his optimistic thinking has them in the right direction.
“I feel good about our group,” Alberici said. “We play together and I'm really excited for our season.”
