We can all give just 15 minutes a week to better the lives of animals. How is that possible? Just go to www.cayugaanimaladvocates.org where the first thing you'll see is “Take a Stand for Animals.” Just click on it, and it will take you to some petitions to sign. There you will also read about some animal issues that need your help and what further steps you can take.
Also on the Cayuga Animal Advocates Web site are pages with tips on the following topics: spay/neuter help, animal laws, behavior problems, all about puppies, dogs in need, helping cats, children and animals and animal services in Cayuga County.

You can read my posts on various subjects updated weekly and send me your comments.

What the election brought for animals:

#&149; California voters overwhelmingly approved Proposition 2, a landmark measure that bans three of the cruelest factory farming confinement systems: battery cages, veal crates, and gestation cages.

By a vote of more than 60 percent Californians sent a clear message to agribusiness that cruelty is not acceptable. Unfortunately a lot of suffering will go on from now until 2015 when the law takes effect.

Animal advocates hope that as California goes so goes the rest of the country.

It is to be noted that veal crates, gestation crates and battery cage confinement systems have been banned throughout Europe. With the passage of proposition 2 California joins four U.S. states ( Florida, Arizona, Oregon and Colorado) in outlawing gestation crates and becomes the third to outlaw veal crates and the first state to ban battery cages. For more information on this historic victory go to www.farmsanctuary.org.

#&149; Massachusetts voters approved The Greyhound Protection Act which bans greyhound dog track racing by 2010. The Greyhound Protection Act sought to ban greyhound racing at dog racing tracks throughout Massachusetts based on the argument that the greyhounds that are used for racing are subjected to inhumane treatment.

#&149; At the recent Islamic Principles on Animal Transport and Slaughter Conference, held in Cairo, Egypt, the welfare of farm animals was brought into the spotlight as participants discussed aligning animal transport and slaughter conditions with the teachings of the Koran.
