Our View: Hit & Misses

HIT: To the city of Auburn for realizing that in these difficult economic times, going green can actually cost more green - greenbacks that is.
The city was looking at buying a pair of natural-gas powered trash compactors which would have been more environmentally friendly, but the green compactors would have cost between $70,000 to $90,000 more than conventional ones. The city hoped state or federal grants would help make up the difference but none could be found, so they chose to purchase conventional trucks instead.

The city is right to consider the environment when making equipment decisions, but there are times when it isn't feasible.

HIT: To the 95th anniversary celebrated by the Falconettes, established in Auburn in 1913. Bonding with a shared commitment to its heritage and doing good works, the group's members get involved in a variety of causes that make a positive difference in the community.

The group celebrated in Auburn recently with a special Mass and a dinner with honors for many of its members.

MISS: To a pair of simultaneous fires that sent several area fire departments scrambling this week.

As dozens of firefighters tried to save a home in Venice Tuesday afternoon, an Auburn home also caught fire. The Steel Street home was extensively damaged, and the Cook Road home in Venice was destroyed.

HIT: To the start of the Syracuse University men's and women's basketball seasons. The men have missed the NCAAs for two straight seasons, but with the return of Andy Rautins and Eric Devendorf from injuries, stand a good chance of getting to the tournament and contending for the Big East title.

The women, who surprised local fans by making the NCAAs for the first time in years last season, hope to build on that success and give perennial Big East power UConn some competition.
